Dr. Uwe Stender @UweStenderPhD
@twixsftbl I hope you will get multiple offers. Talk to ALL of them, ask them any question you want. Ask them how many clients they have, how quickly they respond to your emails once you are a client. Decide who YOU like the most, don't worry about their sales. Then pick THE one...IF they don't do IRL what they claimed to do during the call, fire them and get a new agent who does what they say they will do.

@UweStenderPhD Whats the best way to pick an agent if you get multiple acceptances? I haven’t queried yet and would be SO HAPPY to have just one. But I’d like to know the process if I get more than one.I hope you will get multiple offers. Talk to ALL of them, ask them any question you want. Ask them how many clients they have, how quickly they respond to your emails once you are a client. Decide who YOU like the most, don't worry about their sales. Then pick THE one...

@UweStenderPhD Thanks. :) Do you as an agent appreciate getting nudges, or is it mostly for the writer’s reassurance?GREAT question. IF I genuinely did not get to it for whatever reason I RELISH a nudge. HOWEVER, IF you nudge me when you received a specific out of office message that states not to nudge me I will just delete. And, YES, I DO remember when I utilized an out of office message.

D.A. Prischmann @DA_Prischmann
@UweStenderPhD Hello, do you sign authors on a project by project basis, or on a long-term / career basis? Thanks!Only career. UNLESS you are Rihanna or Zoë Kravitz, then I would be flexible and just rep whatever you deem me worthy of repping.

@UweStenderPhD Is there any point/benefit in nudging an agent who’s had your full for a while? (eg. several months.) Or is it unlikely to speed them up, just adds to the clutter in their inbox, and you’re best off just patiently waiting? #askagentI think 3 months is a reasonable time to follow up.

@UweStenderPhD If you receive a query and it's not for you, do you share with others in the office if it may be a better fit?Yes, I do. Either by literally forwarding the query to someone here, OR by urging the writer to query someone else specifically.

Steven L Fritz @StevenLFritz1
@UweStenderPhD I've read that comps should be about a comparable audience, not comparable theme. I.e., people who liked X will like my new novel Y. Is there anything to that? Not in my opinion. I'd go with theme over audience.

@UweStenderPhD Real question #2: This new adult genre, is it really a thing? And if so, would you represent it? Think an MC who's 20-21. Thank you!I personally love it, but publishers (despite what they occasionally claim) frankly don't, so that is an additional hurdle. Not a categorical NO, but hurdle #19427.

@UweStenderPhD How important is a title in an agent query? Not very unless it is totally ridiculous.

Julie L Whitehead @julielwhitehea1
@UweStenderPhD Do suggest querying a memoir with a full draft complete or on proposal (I know you've said you're only interested in celeb memoir now, but I was wondering what the general rules were). In my, unreliable, opinion, as I am not really open to it, I think you will need the full. But I am not THE expert on that.

Robert Valletta @RVallettaWriter
@UweStenderPhD @heyjomachin What's the best way for a debut author to get a query read and responded to by an agent?Write a great query. I even respond if the query isn't great, unless you query stuff I don't rep or otherwise violate submission guidelines. But if it isn't a query that works for me, I will pass. Write another book, write another query.

@UweStenderPhD You've often said you like just about any genre & are open to all queries. Do you have a favorite genre?I don't. I get bored easily.

@UweStenderPhD In regards to the recent conversations on YA SF being “dead”, is it okay to present a pre-dystopian story as “near-future contemporary” in a query?Yesterday, @alechiawrites's brilliant THE SOUND OF STARS was released, so much for YA SF being dead. Write what you feel compelled to write. Who are the self proclaimed "experts" who determine life or death? I wouldn't listen to rumors by "keyboard" experts. Write YOUR book.

@UweStenderPhD What advice do you have for evaluating the pacing of a draft? And what is your approach to those sorts of big-picture revisions from an agent's perspective? Thanks for your time! #askagent
Honestly, I either LOVE it or DON'T. If I love it, then we will fix whatever, if I don't, I will pass.

Elissa McColl @ElissaMccoll
@UweStenderPhD What's some approximate numbers for # of queries, # of request and # of new clients signed in a given time frame for you and/or your agency?I can't speak for the agency. For me, and my incredible assistant @l_e_thompson, 15,000 or more a year *about 41 daily, likely more*. The rest depends on variables. Maybe 20-40 monthly requests. The rest depends on other variables.

@UweStenderPhD I have two completed/polished novels - a historical fiction and a YA fantasy. An agent at a conference recently told me I should query both simultaneously. (Currently only querying the YA) What are your thoughts on that? Thanks! #askagentTough question. Not sure. Maybe both but to different agencies, and then go from there.

@UweStenderPhD What would you say are agent "red flags?"Signs of insanity and spelling errors.

@UweStenderPhD What is your suggestion for how many queries to send out at once, and then how long to wait between bursts of queries?Who are your Top 20 favorite agents? Go to them first simultaneously. How long to wait, I don't know. No more than a month.

@UweStenderPhD Is it better to have a comp title that's 5 years old and fits your book quite well or to have a more recent comp that doesn't fit as well?5 years seems to be a recent enough comp to me.
