@UweStenderPhD Do you think it’s best to have work edited before submitting to an agent? You need to put your best foot forward, so you need to have an error free book.

@UweStenderPhD Do you always respond after requesting a full, even if you are ultimately rejecting it? Is that standard procedure for most agents?I always respond, but I have no idea what other agents do.

Dominic J. Sciucchetti @thisdogwrites
@UweStenderPhD What is the largest book (in terms of word count) most agents will accept from a first time author? Specifically in Fantasy or Science Fiction.I can't speak for others, but I personally would start getting concerned at 110k at the latest in SFF. In contemporary, at 100k. But it depends on the project.

@UweStenderPhD What would you say to a client who likes to write in two or three genres? Or for two or three age group?IF they are great at all genres, that's awesome. If not, then stick to your strengths.

Dan Fitzgerald @DanFitzWrites
@UweStenderPhD Do some agents have multiple rejection form letters? One for not my thing, one for good query weak writing, etc? Sometimes I get a rejection that feels too specific for a form but not specific enough to be personal.I can't answer for other agents. I personally will read EVERY query that I receive, but if I am not interested after reading it, I will send a "form" email, because there is not enough time in the day, or my life, to be specific for every query.

@UweStenderPhD A question for you: One of your best/happiest moments of agenting this year?General question: knowing the market is important for both writers and agents alike. Beyond reading, what else can writers and/or aspiring agents do to stay informed about the publishing industry?

@UweStenderPhD How much say does an author get in book title, cover, and cover artist? Also, thank you so much for doing these!Thank you. The author gets consultation. In the end, the publisher decides, but they realistically don't want to frustrate the author.

@UweStenderPhD Would you ever consider repping historical fiction? If yes, what period?I would. Probably anything post industrial revolution.
Literary Agent
Maria D. Holderman #NaNoWriMo @MariaHolderman
@UweStenderPhD Historical fiction or nonfiction? Which one is preferred by editors?Whichever is better written, more interesting, etc. etc. Essentially, whichever a publisher deems more likely to make them more money.

William Greene @dailyfalconer
@UweStenderPhD Any difference between what you look for in YA and Adult Q Letter format/content?Query letters for fiction are query letters for fiction regardless of age group.

Morgan Eck @MakeshiftMorgan
@UweStenderPhD I'm curious if you think it's possible for an author to be published across widely varied genres... say, a fantasy book followed by a horror book. Does this risk alienating fans of one/not the other? For a bestselling author, that is not a problem. For a "regular" author, ideally, you should find a foothold in one genre before you branch out, OR use a pseudonym, but establishing first might be better.

@UweStenderPhD In your opinion is YA just a marketing category? Or does it mean more than that? #askagentIt describes the ideal target audience.

@UweStenderPhD Thank you! What sort of MG fantasies feel freshest to you, and which ones less so? (Whether setting, subgenre, plot type, etc.)I know it when I see it...is the most frustrating, yet most accurate answer to that question.

Belinda Grant @belindagrant80
@UweStenderPhD What are your thoughts on young YA? Is it too hard to query/sell in the current market? One of my colleagues sold a "young YA" for six figures to one of my favorite editors in the world , and, based on a prior bet, I had to dye my hair purple for that. So, if it is good, it can sell.

Mindy Wendell @mnwendell
@UweStenderPhD Is the inclusion of an author’s note with historical information for a MG historical novel a decision made by an author or the publisher? And if you’ve written one, should it be included in a request for a full submission?First question, it could be either. Second question, sure, why not?
Literary Agent
CT Liotta @CTLiotta
@UweStenderPhD When it's time to resubmit a revision after a few years, should I start anew with a fresh query, or re-introduce it another way? #askagentProbably by stating that the changes were SIGNIFICANT and then roll back into the query...of course if you have a better query instead of the old one that's even better...

@UweStenderPhD V interested to learn what you see in MG fantasy in Frankfurt. In the meantime, what would you most love to see in this age grp and genre?I would love to see suspense, or humor, or fantasy in that age group.
