@UweStenderPhD How many words is too many for a historical?Do you count the prologue or the historical facts list at the end?
#askagent
You should count everything. Essentially, there is never a correct answer on word count, but I'd keep it -ideally-below 100K for a debut. And reconsider the prologue, put it in the plot.

@UweStenderPhD Regarding fiction, do you ask for pages based in part in what you know or suspect the editors you want to query are looking for? Or is it purely a matter of your own taste in novels? #askagentI am fortunate enough to only request what *I*want while obviously hoping publishers will agree.

@UweStenderPhD When you request a full, how soon do you expect to see it arrive? #askagentThank you for hosting.
Instantly...so FINISH it to be perfect, and THEN query.

@UweStenderPhD How many children’s picture books do you need to have written in order to query? I once was told to have 5-6 ready in addition, not sure if that’s how everyone does it or just that specific agent. (Thanks for doing this regularly ☺️)ONE GREAT one.

@UweStenderPhD Are there any non-fiction reference books on writing techniques you recommend for authors?#askagent
Yes. Donald Maass' WRITING THE BREAKOUT NOVEL. incl. the workbook.

@UweStenderPhD If you queried an agent and received a form rejection or NR but have significantly revised the MS (more than 50%) would re-querying be amenable? If so, how would you address that in the new query? For me, it would be. I cannot speak for others. Just tell me.

@UweStenderPhD What kind of platforms do you recommend an author have established before querying?#askagent
In nonfiction, be a widely recognized expert/scholar, or minimally almost as well known as Rihanna. In fiction, I couldn't care less.

Mike Spinney @spinzo
@UweStenderPhD how "done" should a mss be before reaching out with an inquiry? #askagentIt has to be PERFECT.

@UweStenderPhD Is it appropriate to write a thank you email to an agent post rejection of a full/partial, or is that just annoying? Not annoying to me, but American born agents may feel differently.

VieVee Robinswood @RobinswoodVv
@UweStenderPhD Sorry!! I've been told before that it helps hugely to have a following when seeking rep/publication of work so there will be greater demand as opposed to agents taking a chance on a complete unknown. Good to know the main focus with fiction is on writing ability though. Thank youDon't be sorry. I truly think that advice is not good advice. Focus on your craft and better your writing.

@UweStenderPhD @Maria_Tureaud Sent a nudge 100 days after submitting my full. Been a few weeks since with no response. What now?Keep querying, and never forget. And if they ever want something from YOU in the future, and you have another choice, go with the second choice. If you are choiceless, bite the bullet.

Amber A. Logan @AmberAnnLogan
@UweStenderPhD If a querying author mentions that an editor you’ve worked with in the past has shown interest in her manuscript and wants to be on future sub lists, would this reflect favorably on the author? Or is that only of interest post-representation? Thanks for your time!I would add the editor to my potential submit list. But interest does not equal an actual offer.

@UweStenderPhD Advice for those in the query trenches? 😂Yes. Write a good query, an even better book, never take rejection personally, and don't ever give up.

Tom Phillips @TommyPx3
@UweStenderPhD @BMichelleMorris Do you have a MSWL? If not what kind of MS are up your alley?I do. I am looking for brilliantly written books with high stakes and an even better hook.

@UweStenderPhD Hi, if you're new to this with only a small amount of people wanting to buy it before it's even finished, does it help if you have other published work elsewhere for credibility e.g. winning writing comps. Or can an 'unknown' get an agent purely on writing skills alone? #askagentI am confused about the first 2/3rds of this question. If you write fiction the ONLY thing I care about is your writing. In nonfiction, in general, I still need great writing, but platform can possibly overcome that.

@UweStenderPhD Is there any particular genre or subject you'd like to see in your query inbox right now, given the gloomy current state of affairs in the USA?It is unrelated to the state of the U.S. I just want great novels and nonfiction.
