@UweStenderPhD Do you ever skip the query and go straight to the pages? Conversely, how often do you skip the pages after reading the query? 📚🖋💕No. If I like the query, I will ask for the full. If I don't like the query, I will pass.

@UweStenderPhD How saturated is the YA Contemporary Mystery market? WIP...If it is brilliant, not saturated. If it is average...it will drown.

@UweStenderPhD Any advice for a Christian picture book when querying? Not really. But definitely try "religious" publishers.

@UweStenderPhD Do you think it's best to mention title/genre/word count at the beginning or end of a query? I've seen it both ways, but I'm not sure which is ideal. It does not matter, really, but I like to see such info earlier rather than later. #ButThatsJustMe

@UweStenderPhD Hi, Uwe! 👋🏻 When an agent reads a full MS, does he/she expect it to be “perfect” before offering rep? Or is it more about the potential? I’m wondering what kinds of things are “fixable” or what kind of flaw is ever over-looked because an agent still loves the story. #askagentThat depends. I have offered on voice and potential a few times, and it served me well. But generally, you need a manuscript to be as perfect as possible.

@UweStenderPhD I want to get a job as an agent once I finish college this December but I don’t live close enough to any literary agencies and finding remote internships are basically impossible. Do you have any advice? #askagentWell, there ARE remote internships available. But, yes, it is a very very tough business to break into. My best advice will sound hollow, but it IS genuine: don't give up. If it is really your dream, there will be a way. That aside, it is tough, even brutal, to make it work.

@UweStenderPhD How to agents/editors feel about prologues? I’ve heard mixed reviews about them, and I’m unsure if I should just turn my prologue into a chapter to make submission easier. If the prologue can be integrated into the story, I would. If not. I would keep it as brief as possible.

@UweStenderPhD Hi! What is the average length of time an agent takes to review a requested full MS? #askagent 😁Fantastic question. I don't know the answer. Anywhere from 1 day to 6 months...

@UweStenderPhD What is (in your experience) the top reason a mss is rejected? I know it's subjective, so I wonder what recurring flaws you encounter that don't work for you.Lose my interest by page 2. Causes: nothing happens (no stakes), boring protagonist, poor writing, pretentious writing, tons of errors.

@UweStenderPhD How much store does the agent put into looking at the bio? I have no official writing experience, and I worry that even if I do find the courage to query again, I won't pass the cover letter test. I'm just not interesting enough. In fiction, I don't care. In nonfiction, you NEED a platform, the bigger the better. If you write, you should query. Don't let (uh oh hint time) NOs get in the way. I'm drowning in a sea of NOes myself all the time. But at least *I* KNOW that NO's is genitive AND NOT PLURAL!!!!!

@UweStenderPhD What do you think makes a bestseller in your opinion? Luck, good writing, the blood of a unicorn? Ever read a book--that you represent or not---and said, this right here is a bestseller? All of it, especially the unicorn blood. Ultimately, it boils down to word of mouth. And that can be achieved in many ways. Yes, a book I offered on and didn't get: Tomi Adeyemi's debut. Fantastic writer, kind person, great story, big buzz.

@UweStenderPhD @AngeliqueKerber Cheers to your prediction, and many thanks for #askagentAre satire and death too heavy of topics for #mglit?
Not necessarily, but it depends on how it is done. And, ideally, don't tag my German Wimbledon Hero in questions. 😎

@UweStenderPhD Is it ok for a writer to use the same name for PB and #kidlit genres AND for romance/WF w/sex scenes or should a pseudonym be made up for the latter?I would use a pen name, but that is just a suggestion, not a fact.

@UweStenderPhD @AngeliqueKerber What do you think is an important self-editing tip for writers preparing to send manuscript requests? The manuscript should be as free of errors as possible. Also, ideally, you need to draw me into the story in the first 3 pages, ideally via voice, protagonist, or stakes.

@UweStenderPhD I’m writing a time travel adv that involves a few key women that made an enormous impact in history. The 3 involved all died a long time ago (pre-1960’s). Is there a potential issue w/ using these figures even if it’s longer than 70 years since death? It depends on the novel and the specifics. But if Lincoln can hunt vampires, you are ok, at least contentwise.

@UweStenderPhD I revised a YA MS from the 90's to contemp. based on agent feedback. Should I mention this in new twitter pitch contests? Had 5 fulls from past contests but all sent a detailed pass letter bc it wasn't a modern setting for YA. A few asked for R/R.I would not mention it.

@UweStenderPhD Good evening! 🙂 Is there a time of year where it’s a bit more difficult to go on sub, and if so, why? Also, do authors ever have more than one book on sub at a time? Thank you!#askagent
In general, my advice would be to focus on one book. Bad times: well, I shut down between December 16- January 3 usually. July/August are tougher due to vacations, but one never knows.
