@kaitylynne13 Hi Kaitlyn, are traditional email/website queries the best first approach to an agent, or do you think things like conference pitch sessions, twitter pitches etc. work better?Depends what works best for you. Traditional queries work, but so do conferences and pitch contests. Why not utilize all? If you're querying, there's no harm in also entering contests or attending conference one-on-ones. #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What are you looking for in a synopsis?Beginning, middle, end, and short bits on how they all link together. It can be dry. It doesn't have to be exciting as long as I am told the main plot points in the book. No subplots/motivations/emotions #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What is your opinion on HOW to start a story? Some say in the middle of the action, others say build a rapport between your reader and your MC.#askagent
It's kind of a blend of both. I love in the midst of a scene, but that can be action-packed or subtle. It doesn't always have to be explosive. But it should introduce us to the character and the conflict/challenge that propels us into the true plot #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Hello! Do agents mind if an author is interested in writing more than one genre? Say they sign with a thriller but also want to write fantasy or something else in the future?Dependent on agent. If an agent offers you rep, tell them you plan to write other genres/ages and ask if that works with them. If not, they may not be the agent for you #askagent I personally don't mind =]

@kaitylynne13 What is the standard wait time for response on a full? An agent requested a full at a conference in july, but I havent received a decision. I nudged about a month ago with no response. #askagentDefinitely dependent on the agent. I always say to check in every 3 months, regardless if they respond or not. I've known some agents to take quite a long time (and we're so sorry!) #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What factors play into you offering an R&R vs a rejection? #askagentYay! If I love the story and truly fall into the characters or concept, and I see a lot of potential in the writer's style or vision, I offer an R&R. It's not often. Usually, it's because I loved it but there's too much editing to be done before it's truly ready #askagent

Kaitlyn Johnson - Closed to Queries @kaitylynne13
@zanlowell This means there needs to be a deep edit. Either the storyline is completely revamped, the characters plot/motivations are far more fleshed out, or the setting is much more vivid/reworked. It should definitely be recognizable in your hook, but (1/2) #askagentI often tell writers it should be a couple months at least before sending back (dependent on speed/time for writer). If we get it too soon, we worry it was rushed and not truly revised #askagent (2/2)

Zan Lowell is querying @zanlowell
@kaitylynne13 I've seen some agents say they are willing to take a second look at revised queries as long as there are significant enough changes. Of course this is all subjective, but any insight on how to gauge if your revisions are significant enough? Is there also x amount of time to wait? This means there needs to be a deep edit. Either the storyline is completely revamped, the characters plot/motivations are far more fleshed out, or the setting is much more vivid/reworked. It should definitely be recognizable in your hook, but (1/2) #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Hi! I've seen a lot of agents working through their email backlog for the end of the year.Assuming that the novel is in the best shape possible, is there a best time of the year to query?
There's not a tried and true date, but usually agents close their boxes toward the end of the year so they can catch up. Then, in Jan/Feb, they reopen and a waterfall of queries come in. I'd suggest either then or mid-year, but it really just depends on the agent #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What level of personalization is best in a query letter, assuming you have no connection to the agent? #askagentIf you have no connection to the agent, it's fine to simply say "I believe my Genre/Age title would be a great fit for your list." However, it's great to mention if you saw them tweet a certain MSWL or if you've followed them on social media, etc. #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What are you looking for in a manuscript right now? Mines centred around a disabled protagonist (I have the same disability) and its hard to know who to query to. 🖤I definitely want stories with MCs living with a disability, so send away! lol people can always look at my MSWL or agency profile to see more of what I like #askagent

@kaitylynne13 If a writer has an idea for a YA fantasy and an MG fantasy, do you think because of the market lately that the person should dive into the MG fantasy first? I keep hearing that YA is saturated, especially YA fantasy. Thanks! #askagentI say write the book you want to write. Yes, YA Fantasy has a ton in it and is hard to sell, but we still LOVE it and it still does sell. Write the story that is truly what you want it to be #askagent

ronnie 🏳️🌈 #amquerying @mxronnieriley
@kaitylynne13 @noulakaraszi Should you include your intentions with your story in your query? (i.e. mentioning that characters’ sexuality and race are not a main point of contention, or that the story focuses on how to support SAS vs the assault itself)I would focus on the pitch itself. If the agent loves it and wants to set up a call, then you can fully discuss your intentions with the work #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Thanks for doing this, Kaitlyn! How do agents generally look on hybrid #selfpub/#tradpub authors now? I don't mean people trying to shop a MS they've already published, I mean #writers who do both because some saleable things are a better fit for agents, & some oddities less so.
Hybrid is wonderful! Most agents I know welcome hybrid authors and are there to help them in their career efforts on both sides #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Is it possible to query a book with a notable artist attached to doing the artwork for the cover? Would this turn away an agent or would they welcome it? #askanagentIf you have someone attached to the illustration/artwork already, I'd state that. That shouldn't be skipped unless you aren't committed to working with them for the piece #askagent

@kaitylynne13 I've heard mixed things on this: if the story is written in first person past tense, is it okay for the blurb to be written the same way when querying? I've often heard not to make it first person in queries, but then again, if that's the POV, shouldn't it be that way? #askagentNo, the pitch should be from the author, so third person and in present tense. The query shouldn't reflect a character's voice #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What is a tasteful way to respond to a rejection? I want to know their reasons for rejecting me; I know I can become a better writer from it, but am not sure how to ask the agent in a professional way.honestly, if the agent doesn't provide feedback, I wouldn't respond asking for more. It's unfortunate, but some don't have time to give more than a form rejection or some simple yet helpful feedback #askagent
