Going to say it again: if you’re an author, you shouldn’t alter your twitter handle. Not only is it a brand recognition issue to use some funny, temporary thing. It likewise makes it impossible for your agent or editor or colleague to tag you if the new handle isn’t known.

A rejection doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with your MS. Sometimes I really like a MS, but if I don't LOVE it, I can't represent it. Another agent might go bananas over the same project. Very subjective. #BestFit #pubtip #amquerying

Rejections are hard for you and for us. We’re not rejecting YOU, just this particular project. You might send us another project that we MUST have. Or another agent might love the one we rejected. In the end, we’re all looking for the right fit. #amquerying #pubtip #amagenting

FYI #authors: it's highly unlikely that an editor from a major publishing house would contact you and/or offer a book deal via a Gmail account. If you're communicating with someone who doesn't have an official company email address, it may be a scam! Be careful. #pubtipJust to be clear: not really talking about "phishing" in this situation... more like catfishing. #pubtip

Breakdown of submissions I get:Perfect books that need no revisions: Rare to never.
Books w/ great idea/writing but need work: Sometimes. (I buy these if author revises)
Ok books. Not great, not bad: All the time. (Usually reject)
Books completely off target: Too often
Ditto. Be creative to push yourself into that "Great" category and don't settle for just okay. #pubtip

- I've been writing for 20+ years, but not seriously (goal of publication) until 7 years ago- It took me 4 manuscripts and 5 years to find an agent
- I wrote STARFISH while on sub with my 4th MS that didn't sell
- STARFISH officially sold 10 months after signing with my agent twitter.com/CaitlinLaRue/s…
I find writers with the highest success rate are the ones with the most patience and perseverance. Success doesn’t usually happen overnight in publishing. There’s a lot of heartbreak and tears along the way, but the key is to always ALWAYS keep going. #pubtip

Can we start a thread with #authorstats cuz real life is not write a book get a dealPls rt
-how long you’ve been writing
-how long it took to get agent
-how long it took to get 1st deal
-how many ms’s did you write before 1st deal
-which # ms was your first deal?
Every querying author should be checking out #authorstats. Those stories of agent on the first book and it sold a month later are outliers. Publishing is a long game. And always remember: your journey is your own. EVERYONE is different #pubtip

9. BUT! And this is an important BUT. Know that you are not expected to agree with your editor's requests 100%. She knows you're not a robot. Your job is to critically consider what will strengthen the book and make sure she's happy. And don't be a jerk/diva about it.Whenever my clients get an edit letter, no matter if it’s their first book our fourth have this reminder at the very start of it. I’m not here to turn a book into something it’s not. #pubtip

Dialogue tip: If your dialogue is getting a touch too stilted because characters are too direct or expository in what they say, try rewriting the dialogue around the facts, and let your reader fill in the negative space. The best text is often subtext. This is great advice! Make your readers do some of the work. An engaged reader will find it harder - if not impossible - to put your book down. #amwriting #writingtips #writingtip #pubtip

A true revision means really digging deep and reworking a book. And that might mean a trickle down effect where one change affects things later in the book. Don't be afraid to do it. It could be just what the story needs to hit the next level.Great #pubtip from LI editor @EmilyRodmell

Querying is like being on The Voice. Mentors (agents) can't mentor (represent) everyone, but that doesn't mean they don't see promise in the ones they send home (reject). Don't give up. #amquerying #pubtip #amagenting
