Something I've seen a lot of lately.
Word count doesn't determine age category. It's not MG just because it's 50k or below. More likely, you need to edit and change that word count to accurately mirror industry standards for the true category #querytip #amquerying #amagenting

Stephen King says that Tana French's "extraordinary" new novel, "The Witch Elm," lands in the twilight zone between mystery/suspense and literature nyti.ms/2ILN2BSI just have to say that as an editor who often writes or revises copy, I really appreciate what @StephenKing says here about copy. Keep it simple, please! It's a teaser--not a synopsis! #engagethereader #pubtip

When #amquerying use a font that almost every computer can read, like TNR or Verdana. I often read on my phone and if fancy fonts come through they can be difficult to read. #querytip

#querytip Y’all. If you don’t have comp titles, just say nothing about them. Leave the box blank.Don’t tell me explicitly you don’t know bc you don’t read, or you don’t have time, or any of a million other reasons akin to those. pic.twitter.com/yKefpAHVyI
It’s an immediate red flag, bc if you don’t read, if you don’t put in that SMALL BIT of effort, it makes me question whether you’re a) serious about publishing and b) able and willing to make edits.

@sharpegirl @byobrooks There are people at this press who have experienced *real* go-to-the-police harassment. Trust us -- a letter is not that. Or maybe you think it is -- in which case, go to the police. Presumably you know who sent it...a #querytip for you: why is this press still out here trying to dictate what counts and doesn't count as harassment? agents (many of them women) have also rec'd this sort of mail at home and felt unsafe, and now get to watch their fears dismissed as not "real".

Writers, please sign your query letters? It makes my life when I go to respond (either way) so much easier. Otherwise, it's just me going, "I...hope...this is your name?" #querytipSo true! Sometimes the “email name” is not your name or your pen name, so I don’t know if you want to be called Ms. The Destroyer of Worlds, or Mary Sue, or what. I usually go off how you sign the letter.
(Also, make sure your email name is your name or pen name.) #querytip
