Follow up to my earlier #querytip #writetip: WHY ARE STAKES IMPORTANT? B/c they give readers a reason to care about 1-what happens to the protagonist 2-what happens to the protagonist's group/world, or 3-the internal, seeing the protagonist's convictions/motivations tested.

I always find it difficult to pass on quality writing when I can't identify the stakes of the novel (OR more importantly STRONG ENOUGH stakes) in the query letter. I can't spend 5 hours reading & looking for them, so you have to tell me up front! #writetip #querytip #sellme

Aspiring authors, please use your Twitter to talk about what you are writing, what you are reading. Cute pics & occasional offtopicness fine, but acting like a retweet bot for extremist politics, of any kind, is brainless #literaryagents #querytip

Susan, A Graham @Grahamophones

Hi! I feel like this should go without saying, but please do not call (especially repeatedly) with your name and number and ask us to call you back because you need an agent. If you can google our number, you can google our submissions inbox. #querytip #subtip

I've been encountering this A Lot lately. It tells me either you can't follow guidelines, which are there for a reason, or you're calling an agent whose website you haven't been to. If you do it repeatedly, it even gets a touch creepy. Please don't do this. #subtip #querytip

#pubtip = It's common for amazon rankings to be lower for middle grade novels. MG sells very well at B&N and indie bookstores - especially in print. Amazon rankings and reviews *tend* to come from consumers who buy on amazon.

Hello, comp titles can be good, but your query should be about your book, not other people's books! Don't tell me what other books are about, what is yours about! Don't list other people's books first! Serve your work, pals, by focusing on your work in-query!! #subtip #querytip

DO NOT beat yourself up for the book that did not soar the way you envisioned it at the beginning. You can't control the market, or competing titles, or agent/editor wishlists, and you can only learn as fast as you do. Every book has a purpose, even the one in the drawer. /8
