@BookEndsJessica I have a question: How does this work for those writers who "fly into the mist", according to JoBev? They may have a snippet of an idea but no detailed outline. That's not their process. It might not, but as the story takes shape you could write the query. Or, if you need to wait until the book is finished to write the query then seriously consider the query as part of the revision process instead of the final step. #querytip

Word to the wise: don’t pitch your book to agents on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter or any social media, for that matter. You will be ignored if you ignore our query instructions. #querytip #publishing

A strong book, with a strong hook (or saleable element), will often write itself with lots of revisions and tweaking. #querytipWriting a query for a book that still needs to be shaped and thought through will feel (and be) nearly impossible. #querytip

Writing the query, trying to concisely tell about the book you are writing, helps you see if you actually have a book worth writing. #querytip #amwritingIf you are struggling to make the query sound exciting, or hone in on the key points, maybe you need to rethink the book rather than just the query. #querytip

Just passed on a query because the blurb revealed a major plot hole. #threadIt's why I often recommend authors write the query even before writing the book #querytip

It's always a red flag when there are multiple errors in your query. If necessary, have someone else read/edit it BEFORE sending to agents! #amquerying #querytip

#querytip #subtip #writingtip - Look at the market. How long are books in your desired age category/genre? It is UNLIKELY that the average book in your category/genre is significantly over 200K words. It is Very likely the average word count is significantly under 200K words.

In speaking for ourselves: BookEnds agents specifically spend a lot of time sharing their likes & dislikes, wants & turn-offs. We share interviews we've done & we also send out submission updates, genres we're opening/closing to, etc. etc. #amwriting #amagentingBut in general- make sure you check out hashtags like those above (#querytip #amquerying) as well as #MSWL #AmWriting #Writetip. Check the feed of each agent you're specifically planning to query. You might learn your project isn't a great fit for them but better for a colleague

When querying, or preparing to query, make sure you follow agents on Twitter and take notes on their comments. A #thread! #amqueryingBefore you hit send on that email, you should always do your research. Submission guidelines, maybe read interviews, and yes, Twitter! Because: knowing what often triggers rejection for each specific agent will help you avoid it! #querytip #amwriting #amquerying
