@annmrose If you do something deliberately in the book, like not name the MC, is there a place for that to be explained in the query?Yes this would probably need to be addressed … the how would vary on the project

@annmrose How difficult is it generally for an agent to sell a book and has it gotten harder since you first became an agent? It varies on the project and timing. Overall I would say the big difference is in how long it takes these days. So many be not harder just longer

@annmrose what’s a good wordcount range for lower YA fantasy?60k-80k — I guess it depends on how “low” we are talking about and could it just be MG?

@annmrose I read somewhere that if an author has previously published a novel/novella with a small indie press and not sold a ton of copies due to it being an indie press, it will be more difficult for them to trad publish and find an agent in the future. Is this true? Thank you!Not that I have seen.

@annmrose I'm writing a ~10-book mystery series, but am finishing the first three books before I start querying. I've read that you should only focus on the first book in the query. However, should I mention I have two more books "ready to go"? Thanks. That’s ambitious of you.
I always tell clients only to write the first book and move on because if book 1 doesn’t sell you are spinning your wheels.
But that wasn’t what you asked.

@annmrose Any guidance on how/if to talk about other WIP or goals for writing career in a query letter?I wouldn’t do that at the query stage. I would wait until “the call”

@annmrose Would a paranormal thriller fall under the umbrella of speculative fiction?Speculative is a broad term so yes I feel it could fall under this

@annmrose Thoughts on withdrawing queries on Query Manager and resubmitting? I didn’t know this was a thing until I saw a recent tweet. Why would this feature be used? There is a withdraw feature in QM, so I can confirm that.
As for why a person would use it?
Attached the wrong file
Pulling for more edits
Got an offer of rep and just want to take it without letting anyone else counter
Deciding to shelf a project before they get a response

@UweStenderPhD Also, how common is it to for a writing duo (friends not family/spouses) to be offered rep on a joint book? Would they typically be offered for duo work only, or for all work?I would try to sign them for everything. BUT, if they only want to do the duo, and not the individual, then I, personally, would be OK with that.

@UweStenderPhD I’m here on time! Does not including comp titles in your query affect a writer’s chances at getting rep? And if so, what if, after reading, the agent disagrees with the titles chosen?I never pay attention to comps. BUT if you use them, then they ought to legitimately BE comps to the actual book. 🙂

A discouraged writer asked, just how dire IS the state of publishing, is this REALLY the worst time in history to send things out, is there even any point to submitting material?

@annmrose at what point in the process are sensitivity readers? it is super important to me that my work is read by some but should it happen before querying or after? It’s never too soon to check in and make sure you are getting things right

@annmrose Do literary agents ever try to find an agent to sell musical adaptation rights in the same way they would sell try to find a film/tv agent for clients?Performance rights come in all forms, and I have heard of books getting adapted to stage. (At least this is what I think you are asking.)

@annmrose @Amber_Nadette When agents list their mswl and then say that they’re always open to BIPOC authors, do you think they mean BIPOC authors that match their mswl? It’s difficult to know someone else’s intentions. I think perhaps they are saying they are open to stories beyond what’s in their MSWL 🤷🏼♀️

@annmrose What is an apprentice agent? I’ve only ever seen it at one agency, but the apprentice doesn’t have her own publishers market place or even query tracker yet. The agency owner is a AAR member, but the apprentice isn’t. What are your thoughts?Since I’m not a part of that agency I couldn’t speak to what this role is.
I can ASSUME it’s a person who works in conjunction with another more senior agent so they are being mentored and possibly supervised as they start to build their list. But again this is an assumption

@annmrose A bit of a niche question that I've been getting mixed responses to--as a US ex-pat who lives in the UK, should I be querying agents here or back in the US? Relevant to note, that most of my novels take place in the US, & the setting often serves as a character in its own right. You can query either or both. UK agents can sell here just like US agents can sell there. So find your best champion and don’t worry about their location. ❤️ best of luck!

@annmrose If a novel is a Bildungsroman, would you expect it to be queried as YA or A if it has a more serious tone overall.I think it would depend on the intended audience of the novel. YA readers and Adult readers have different expectations. So ask yourself who is the story written for? This doesn’t mean the other group couldn’t find it and enjoy it. But it does have to firmly sit on one shelf.

@annmrose As an agent, what gets you most excited these days? (Also, I would 100% fall off an elliptical if I tried to do this! haha)It takes practice for sure 🤣
As for what gets me excited (assuming we are talking about queries?) is a strong concept with stealer voice.
In general life, winning money would get me excited—like lots of money!
