Do you have any recommendations on signs for an author to look for that may indicate when they should think about shelving or extensively reworking their project? #askagent @CorvisieroLitIf you've pitched your project to the 'right' literary agents and they are all declining, consider the feedback you're getting. If you see a pattern, then you know what the issue is and you should fix it. If a timing or unlikeable story issue -- shelf it. #AskAgent

@Literary_Tara How far do agents typically read through submitted pages? If, say, an agent requests ten pages in the query, and ends up rejecting it, how likely is it they got through all ten pages? I'm guessing if the pages don't resonate, then an agent will stop reading relatively soon?If I love the premise I'll read until I know I want a partial or until I realize the writing isn't there/pulling me in. Sometimes I read all of the pages, sometimes I read a few paragraphs. Sometimes I don't read the pages at all if the concept isn't there. #askagent

@hannahvanvels Thanks for offering your time! Here's a couple questions I have:What makes a story and pitch pop off the screen for you?
How editorial / hands-on are you with your clients?
Voice and connection with a character. Before I jumped to agenting, I was an editor at a house, so I am very editorial! #askagent

Is it better to look for an agent who fits your story (MSWL, that can change) or one who fits your style/how you work (i.e.: very editorial)? My inventory is broad and I hope to find an agent for the longterm.#askagent
It's important to make sure you target the agent whose MSWL matches what you've written, for sure. You can then discuss agenting styles with those agents who offer rep during the call. Don't limit your opportunity to have your book seen. #askagent

@mcorvisiero @Literary_Tara and if I self publish a book that bangs out 50 thousand copies, why do I need an agent? To me the story is what sells, if it's good it shouldn't matter if it's on the market or not. Just my 2 centsYou need an agent if you want the book to be published by a traditional publisher who can get you into stores and expand your reach, or to sell your sub-rights... or even your next work. It depends on your needs and goals. #AskAgent

@epubagent To add to this question: I receive many โunfortunately, I have to be very selectiveโ responses. Is this the nice way of saying โI didnโt like itโ? ๐๐Hehehe maybe but better that they pass if they donโt truly love the work than have an agent whoโs not fully invested in making the work a success for both of you. #askagent

@CorvisieroLit #askagentIf you receive a query where you feel like the writing style and talent are there, but the manuscript may need some polishing or further development, would you consider representation? Or are do you prefer a highly edited/polished MS?
Thanks agents!
If I absolutely love the concept and the writing is great, but just needs a little help, I would totally consider it. #askagent

Thanks agents!
Some agents are more editorial-based than others and will take on work they can help polish but they donโt have time to do full developmental edits. Remember that agents donโt get paid until the book sells so we prefer to rep woks that are ready for us to sell. #askagent
LivMacy @MacyLiv
@mcorvisiero @Jenelle_Stone @CorvisieroLit As a follow up, if an agent has an interest in an MS that is geared to adult but thinks it would be better as YA, would they say that? And then would they still want to rep or would they want a rewrite first?Sorry for the what if questions!
#askagent
Yes. I have in fact done this. It depends on how much is needed to be revised and the author's liking this idea. Could go either way:) #askagent

@Literary_Tara Are you actually finding publishers who want to buy MS right now? Or is everyone in a holding pattern?#askagent
Yes, publishers are buying books. :) #askagent

@hannahvanvels @JasonHuebinger The most "feedback" I get is that it's not right for their list at this time. Seriously, what does that really mean? I research the agents extensively and write MG fiction (so not as many agents as other genres). I'm perplexed. #askagentI canโt speak for all agents but for me, this usually means that the market is not right for the book with me. So, for example, right now, Iโm not the person to send pandemic books. The work will not be right for my list. #askagent

@Literary_Tara I was deep into drafting a virus induced postapocolyptic #MG with contemporary family issues. Should I keep writing it or shelve for now? Thanks. #askagentThere will probably be agents who will want to capitalize on that story, but I'm not one of them. Lol. So that is truly up to you. #askagent

@CorvisieroLit #askagentWe often hear about what markets are saturated, but what types of books are in big demand right now? Do editors ask you to look out for specific things? Or types of stories?
There are specific topics or categories that are more popular than others within different genres. These are often cyclical. YA is probably the best selling genre right now. Yes, editors share their #MSWL with us often. #AskAgent

@Literary_Tara If one has written and self-published erotic romances under a pen name but wants to pitch a non-erotic romance with their own name, should they mention the other stories in a query?Yes, I think that would be helpful to mention along with the penname. #askagent

If an author has previously worked with small presses, do those releases get taken into consideration if/when an agent offers representation or reviews the query letter? Do they more often hurt or help an author? #askagent @CorvisieroLitSmall presses are great opportunities for debut authors so I like seeing them in author queries. I also research authors before offering rep and itโs great to see when authors have some publishing experience. #askagent

Editors also have manuscript wishlists too and as agents, we build strong relationships with editors so we know what they are looking for. #askagent

How many times do you recommend nudging on a full MS (receiving no response) before taking it as a pass? #askagent @CorvisieroLitWe recommend nudging once. Our team will respond to each submission. #askagent

@CorvisieroLit Does an author sign for one book or for every book she writes with this agency? #askagentIt depends on the agency. @CorvisieroLit signs the author for the life of their career usually unless they part ways for some reason. #askagent
