@UweStenderPhD What do you think makes a bestseller in your opinion? Luck, good writing, the blood of a unicorn? Ever read a book--that you represent or not---and said, this right here is a bestseller? All of it, especially the unicorn blood. Ultimately, it boils down to word of mouth. And that can be achieved in many ways. Yes, a book I offered on and didn't get: Tomi Adeyemi's debut. Fantastic writer, kind person, great story, big buzz.

@BookEndsJessica Thanks, Jessica, but I have to ask, why don't you read the pages of compelling queries? I'm assuming because of market or you have something similar already? #askagentSometimes I just go ahead and request. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Good afternoon! I have a question for you. When writers go to Writer's Conferences and Pitch Slams, should they have copies of their query letter, manuscript, and/or synopsis printed out for agents and editors or is everything pretty much paperless and completed by email?I don't think you need to bother. Few agents will ask for hardcopy. Almost everyone reads electronically now. So save a tree and just bring yourself. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica I've asked around, was advised on Absolute Write that the query should start with 'the blurb' (Main Character/Goal/Stakes) and *then* bio & novel metrics. Is the below wrong?"Dear Ms. Faust,
John is a convict. He wants a second chance...
(more plot)
Conclude with metrics/bio."
I don't think there are any tried & True rules. That's fine. It's also fine to have a paragraph of intro material that includes title, genre, word count and such. #askagent

@UweStenderPhD @AngeliqueKerber Cheers to your prediction, and many thanks for #askagentAre satire and death too heavy of topics for #mglit?
Not necessarily, but it depends on how it is done. And, ideally, don't tag my German Wimbledon Hero in questions. 😎

@UweStenderPhD Is it ok for a writer to use the same name for PB and #kidlit genres AND for romance/WF w/sex scenes or should a pseudonym be made up for the latter?I would use a pen name, but that is just a suggestion, not a fact.

@UweStenderPhD @AngeliqueKerber What do you think is an important self-editing tip for writers preparing to send manuscript requests? The manuscript should be as free of errors as possible. Also, ideally, you need to draw me into the story in the first 3 pages, ideally via voice, protagonist, or stakes.

It's gotten harder now than back in the day when the big publishers took submissions and had guidelines, and we could aim for the word count of the publisher/imprint we were targeting. *sighs for those Good Ol' Days* I wish I could figure out how word count translates to pages! twitter.com/BookEndsJessic…If double-spaced it's probably still safe to say 250 words per page. For any adult fiction you are fairly safe in the 80,000-100,000 range for word count. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Do you read first page/s as standard or only if query compelling?I only read the first page(s) if the query is compelling, but I don't always read first pages even then. #askagent

@PSLiterary Sorry if you've already had this and I missed it! How did you all get into agency work? #askPSLAI did a publishing program at Columbia to see what all interested me. After that I tried my hand at publicity and wasn't a fan, so decided to jump to the exact opposite end of the process. I got an assistant gig and that was that! #askPSLA

How did you each celebrate signing your fist client or finding a home for your first project? #askpsla @kurestinarmada @msmariavicenteOh man! I don't think I did anything big, but it probably involved a bottle of prosecco and a very nice cut of steak. And telling literally everyone in a 20-mile radius. #askPSLA

#askPSLA If someone writes in multiple children’s genres, like MG & PB, do you rep it all, or put limits on the agent/author agreement? It depends on the agent, but that's def something you would talk about in your initial call with them. Some will rep all, or have another agent at the same agency rep it, or be open to you obtaining multiple agents. But you probably want someone who does it all! #askPSLA
