#askTBA Do you want comps to be in a certain time period (some want within 2 last years) or more prefer the tone of the book? Thanks for taking questions!A limit on time periods sounds silly to me. What if it's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE meets STAR WARS? Because even though I just thought of that, I'd totally read it. #askTBA

If your book is self published does that change or influence anything? #askTBAI think it depends on the genre and on how well it does. @louisefury knows more about this than I do... #askTBA

Hello everyone! My question is: what is an acceptable maximum word count for a debut, high fantasy novel? #askTBALet me point you toward my favorite word count discussion of all time: literaticat.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/wordco… #askTBA

Ive had a few very kind rejections simply stating "just not for me". Is it to bold to ask for suggestions to make my next attempt stand out better? I would never expect a response, but I can't help but wonder. Also thank you to rejections, is that weird. #askTBAI get the impulse to ask, I really do. But when I'm open to submissions, I get about 100 a week. I don't have time to give feedback to anyone unless I'm interested in seeing more work from them. I wish I did! But reading subs is only a tiny fraction of my job. #askTBA

I sent my MS out to agents in the spring. I had 9 R&R's, but I rushed and sent the revised MS back too soon. I came close to representation but didn't get it. Since then I've been working hard on the MS and it's finding success on wattpad. Do you think I can query again? #askTBAI think so. Be prepared for some to decline to see the revision, but some might want to see it. #askTBA

How do we feel about query letters with humour? Keep it serious or is it ok to let your personality shine through a bit? #askTBAIt depends. Are you funny? :-) I knew I would like @_becca_donnelly (and her writing) because her query made me laugh out loud. But if an agent doesn't 'get' your sense of humor, maybe they're not the right fit for you. #askTBA

@Trident_Media I’ve got another ☺️! When a writer signs with an agent, how in-depth are the contracts? Do they cover everything from book covers to movie deals, or do those types of contracts come later when/if that type of media comes calling? #TMGTalksOur agency agreements are simple & fair. Looks after interests of agency & author. Usually covers length of term of representation & restates commission structure. There are All Works Term Rep agreements, Single Work Term Rep, & Print Publishing Only Term Rep agreements #TMGTalks

@Mark_Gottlieb What do you see as the next trend in #publishing ? #TMGTalksIt's hard to say what the next trend in book publishing will be as no one really has a crystal ball. For instance, who could have predicted 50 Shades or Harry Potter. I always believe that it's best to be making waves rather than following in the wake of others. #TMGTalks

What are some good books on editing and publishing that you would recommend for someone trying to become a literary agent? #TMGTalksIn looking at my own bookshelf, I see The Chicago Manual of Style, Writer's Market 2017, LMP, Publishing for Profit, The Art of Literary Publishing, Another Life, Max Perkins: Editor of Genius, and a subscription to @PublishersWkly & @PublishersLunch can't hurt #TMGTalks

@Mark_Gottlieb @unrealismbooks Do you think this is still true during the holidays? #TMGTalksThe holidays can slow things down but I've found that pitches going out to publishers this time of year is slow. The same goes for incoming submissions to literary agencies so this could actually be a good time to be submitting to literary agents who have free time! #TMGTalks

What's the best thing about being in publishing in 2017 and the near future? In other words- what great changes have you recently seen or are expecting? #TMGTalksIn the children's market, it's watching and participating in a literary landscape that's both slowly and finally striving for inclusivity, diversity, and honesty in the stories being told and who gets to tell them. #TMGTalks

Memoir: dead or alive in 2018? #TMGTalksMemoir can be tricky since it shares qualities with fiction. Fiction relies on quality prose; nonfiction relies on an author's platform & built-in readership but sometimes a bestselling memoir can come out of nowehere! Take @JDVance1 or @CherylStrayed, for instance. #TMGTalks

When agents say it's a subjective business when rejecting a query, is that just a nicer way to say the manuscript won't sell #TMGTalksSounds like it's an honest way of saying that in the literary agent's own opinion, they don't feel confident that they could sell it, but that another literary agent or literary agency might feel differently. #Publishing is a highly-subjective business #TMGTalks

If a few agents have your full/partial should you send them updates if you make changes due to other agent comments/feedback? Changes are mostly sentence struc/flow/pacing type things rather than plot #TMGTalksGood to have interest! Best to submit a manuscript to literary agents once you've done all that you can with it. Making changes to a manuscript already on submission could disrupt the reading process. Of course the literary agent and editor will help with edits later on #TMGTalks

@abuckslater If a WIP is currently leaning toward YA, but could be adjusted to MG without losing the magic of the story, would you recommend this for today's market? #TMGTalksHi Tiffany! I think this varies project to project. #YA and #MG are separated by more than just age ranges. If it's currently leaning YA, I would follow that instinct, and then reassess after some betareads and revisions. #TMGTalks
