Regarding sensitivity readers, is it okay to hire any to return for a final edit or read once revisions are made after being agented and during submission to book publishers?#AskGZLASure! Some writers have had a couple before they get to me. And when they're contracted, there's bigger discussion with the publisher and others might be brought on after, depending. #AskGZLA

In researching potential agents for representation, how much value should I give recent deals (or lack of) on publishers marketplace? #askagent #askGZLAi love this question. PM sales are a piece of it but not the whole pie. sometimes it takes a long time to have permission to announce a deal. the quantity of deals also isn't important--it's the quality. also look at the overall *agency*'s sales. #askGZLA

#AskGZLA What can publishing do to make the field of agenting more accessible for young people wanting to start a career in agenting? Especially for people from marginalized backgrounds?Money is a big issue, especially when it comes to agenting, so it's a matter of how to get people paid more. And agencies don't have a standard, which makes it tougher. It's a competitive industry, so how to incentivize agencies to pay more for that talent? #AskGZLA

#AskGZLA What can publishing do to make the field of agenting more accessible for young people wanting to start a career in agenting? Especially for people from marginalized backgrounds?PAID INTERNSHIPS!!!!! Privilege is what allows young people to take internships without pay because they are supported in other ways. Most kids can't make that happen, particularly marginalized people and ESP when the internship requires transportation/relocation #AskGZLA

Does a book that handles a mature setting such as racism, bullying, suicide, and dealing with lgbt identity but in a contemp fantasy setting; be seen as "too mature"? Like I hear the market if subjective but if an agent saw this, would it be a turn-off? #askgzlaNope (although in doing homework note that some people have different preferences, of course) - just make sure the topic is been dealt with from an authentic place. #AskGZLA

For an author/illustrator, what are best practices for communicating vision for a pb project, while leaving room for agent/publisher/AD input? finished pieces vs sketches, etc. #AskGZLAYou can best communicate your vision with a PB dummy. The dummy can mostly have sketched out ideas, but then add a couple of fully rendered images to give a more solid idea. #AskGZLA

@rainforestgardn As long as you've read well in that category (and either know what you're doing or are willing to learn!), then go for it! #AskGZLAFor querying as an illustrator, make sure you have examples of fully rendered pages with panels on your website. If you're only the author, I'd want a complete script. Sometimes author/illustrators can query on a proposal/partial dummy, so check agent guidelines! #AskGZLA

beth phelan (on hiatus & closed to queries) @beth_phelan
@SCLanggle i think it depends on what it is they are querying. if it's something that could be submitted for an open option, i'd be happy to see a outline with sample chapters. also fine if the author is somewhat well-known (not necessarily bestselling).if they're writing something different i might want a full ms. #askGZLA

Marietta B Zacker @AgentZacker
@RachaelEWrites Ah - that all depends - most of the time they end up in the cutting room floor. Really think hard about whether or not you need that prologue (or is it just how you always hear it so it's hard to give up?). #AskGZLAalternatively, i have submitted mss without a prologue and then the acquiring editor had the author ADD ONE 😂 #askGZLA

Also if an manuscript has experiment aspects to it, would you be okay if it broke textual and grammar rules or had font changes at certain parts? What experimentalism would you be interested in seeing in an MS? #askgzlaAs long as it's for the sake of the story and as long as it moves the story forward, I'm OK with it, but it needs to feel and be authentic to the story. #AskGZLA

Any tips on how to query a book that doesn’t really have a flashy hook? I’ve found it difficult to pitch my comedic YA contemporary because its plot is quiet, doesn’t have a huge romance angle, & is mostly driven by the relationships between its characters...#askagent #askGZLA

#AskGZLA I see a lot of agents asking for author/illustrator Graphic Novel pitches only. Can an author query a GN script without an illustrator? You can, yes, but they are harder for people to envision since the illustrations are key to telling the story. Still, that doesn't mean it's impossible! #AskGZLA

#AskGZLA What're the advantages and disadvantages of writing in first person? Do literary agents and editors evaluate retrospective narrative versus third person narrative when considering an author’s work? Is there generally a preference?both can be tricky. first person is very intimate and third gives you so more room and narrative distance but emotional access is built up a different way. so with first, being so close to the POV can be both an advantage and disadvantage. #askGZLA

#AskGZLA About how many graphic novel proposals do you typically see a week in the slush pile?Hm, maybe 2 a week, if that? Not a whole lot, but sometimes I do get more than that. Now as for the rest of that inbox, I tend to get about 20 submissions a day, depending. #AskGZLA

What advice would you have for a writer who writes New Adult but wants to query it as either YA or Adult? Do you think New Adult will return in publishing? And do you think college stories can be in YA? #askgzlaYes to college stories being YA but the voice has to hit that still maturing coming-of-age feeling. I think New Adult should come back and you shouldn't force your novel into any category. If they're new adults, own it! but be sure the agent is open to that. #AskGZLA

#askGZLA Any thoughts on querying a short-story collection and a novel at the same time (not in same query or necessarily to same agents)? Any reason I should wait on one?i would say put your best foot forward but be ready to talk about the other. i would also suggest thinking about how you want your agent relationship to look like--do you want separate agents? or someone who would rep both? #askGZLA
