What factors do you consider when requesting an R&R versus offering on a project? #AskgzlaI don't really do R&Rs these days, but I did a few when I was in my first year of agenting. I did them when I saw promise, but the manuscript was not quite there. #askGZLA

@GalltZackerLit @erin_michelle_C @LindaRandom @AgentZacker @beth_phelan Yay - hello! I hired an editor (children’s lit prof I knew) after years of slogging away. The experience was excellent and I learned how to write a novel. Should I NOT mention the editor in my query? Thx! 🙂 #askGZLA#amquerying

DONT BE AFRAID TO MENTION IT!!! It’s nothing to be ashamed of. That agent that said that is weird! #askgzla

#askgzla I queried a book a couple years ago and got a lot of requests, but ultimately no yes. I'm gearing up to query my next project and I'm wondering about query strategy. Do I query those agents that requested my book first, all at once? Batches? Mix in with new agents? Eep!Base your subs on how YOU feel about the agents. Make your list and send it to your favs 1st- whatever feels manageable - no matter if they are brand new or passed on your prior project. And onward down the list. Do not feel any pressure to resubmit - send to your favs! #AskGZLA

Are song lyrics allowed in an MS are there copyright questions around them? #askgzlaThat does become a licensing issue, so legal (at the publisher) will be brought in. It's generally cost prohibitive, though, depending on the song. #AskGZLA

What if you writing in an obscure or rarely explored genre like Oceanpunk or Sandalpunk, what advice would you recommend to that writer? #askgzlaJust do you! Honestly I don't know what either of those are, but I want to find out now! State the genre and give your usual description/synopsis and you'll be totally fine. I'd be intrigued to see niche genre like that #AskGZLA

Is it okay for a client to recommend an artist for maybe a book cover? #askgzlaDown the road, once the book is under contract, the cover is typically a fun topic of conversation. And it does often include the author. #AskGZLA

#askgzla Are publishers generally open to comics that have already been published online? They can be! It depends on the audience for it, but if they love it, yes! My very first sale was of MOONCAKES (@AngrygirLcomics @suzusaur) and quite a bit of it was online first. #AskGZLA

#askGZLA How do you feel about YA MC’s that don’t want to save the world , who’s goals are self-centered ?Ah, YA is all about being self-centered IMHO. MG is another story, but even then! Give me your MC's journey and let me go along for the ride, whatever it may be. #AskGZLA

#AskGZLA I’ve been offered a government subsidy for a full ms critique by an agency. However, I would be required to include 1 or 2 logos of the government bodies in the novel’s colophon. Will this limit my publishing opportunities, especially with the Big 5 publishers? #askagentI've never run into this, but I don't think so? Publishers thankfully have a legal department who would be brought into discuss it if it did become an issue. #AskGZLA

Thoughts on books with VERY reluctant heroes? Like they weren't born with magic but got it anyway? They didn't train with swords but one is put in their hands anyway? They'd much rather be at Starbucks or reading in the Library than hunting down demons & monsters? #AskGZLA🎶I DIDN'T WANT TO BE A HALF-BLOOD🎶 ammiright @LTMusical? But for real, yes reluctant heroes who are just everyday people in CRAZY situations! Makes for awesome humor and a great arc as they figure out how their new role fits in their life #AskGZLA

@AgentZacker and another agent talked about their agency's focus on hanging on to and selling every imaginable subright (licensed pajamas, etc). It was stuff I'd never even considered, so was curious whether GZLA had some unknown focus area as well! 🙂 #AskGZLALiterary Agent
