Q10: NonFiction piece that focuses on a subject matter that is of particular interest to me and is journalistic in nature. I'm not quite sold on this *yet* as the content organization in the sample is a bit choppy. But I really love the topic.

Q9: YA Fantasy. I like dark fantasy, but this one goes a little too dark. And while I love a good Chosen One trope within YA, I'm not seeing enough that is standing out on its own aside from the very dark subject matter. I'm afraid this one just isn't for me.

Q8: An off-beat literary work that has me crushing HARD. Unfortunately, we have a lot of telling statements as the MC breaks the fourth wall. Doing this pulls the reader out of the story rather than making them part of it. But I don't really want to let go yet.

Q7: YA Fantasy where I really like the concept, the synopsis gives me a good idea of the overall structure of the book and I'm not seeing a lot of red flags. The writing is also pretty solid and I definitely think it's worth seeing a little more.

Q6: YA Fantasy that I really want to love, but unfortunately I'm just not really connecting to the premise and I don't think this would be the right fit for me.

Q5: Literary work where we deal with mental health issues. This is definitely in my wheelhouse--a good and bad thing b/c as much as I love them, I am also *very* picky with them. Unfortunately, I'm not really connecting to the premise on this one.

Q4: Mystery with a pretty cool premise. I love the themes the book explores, but the writing suffers from overused filter verbs and telling statements. I see potential though, if the writing can be strengthened.

Q3: A space opera! Strong query, great synopsis, but the writing isn't quite there for me as the voice is a bit more detached than I like. Love the premise, though!

Q2: Southern Gothic, which I love, but the story seems overcrowded in plot, to the point where I feel plausibility is in question. The most important connection between author and reader is trust in the journey and I'm just not getting that with this one.

Q1: The query doesn't tell me anything and the synopsis focuses more on what they were going for than giving me a breakdown of the book. Unfortunately, I need to be able to see the pitch, overall story structure, as well as the writing to move forward. :(
