"Prepare for the worst but hope for the best"...but then what plan do we have if the best happens? Always be ready to go. An agent wants a phone call? Make sure to have several other book ideas on hand so that they know you are more than just your one book. #querytip

Reminder to nonfiction authors, don't forget to put your platform in your proposal. If I ask for one, I already like the premise, but now I need to see the business plan. There are great resources out there on writing proposals, so be sure to do your research! #querytip

Just a #querytip reminder: I do not accept queries through email. Please make sure you are using my QM link per my sub guidelines. Queries sent to my email will be deleted unanswered. Having all my queries in one place allows me to stay organized and timely in my responses.

Please pay attention to submission guidelines when #amquerying. I ask for everything I need to properly review your work. If the query is nondescript, there's no synopsis *and* no sample pages, I don't really have anything to evaluate and it'll be an automatic pass. #querytip

It takes striking the right balance between dialogue and narrative in order to create a fully integrated experience in which a reader can immerse themselves.
That's all I've got for this thread....for now. π I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

There are, of course, exceptions, such as epistolary novels through a series of letters or (as seen more recently) exchanges in text messages. Any rule can be broken, so long as it's broken well and the craft renders highly effective results. #subtips

A story that has no narrative keeps the reader from experiencing the story directly as we can never get close enough to the character. Similarly, a story that has almost no dialogue will cut the reader off from everything that occurs outside of the mind of the character. #subtips

Getting to know all those internal layers of a MC secures reader investment into the plight of the character. Experiencing the inner thoughts and emotions through the character's observations and reactions helps create a strong emotional pull. #subtips

should also reflect your character's personality...which makes finding your character's voice so important. While dialogue is great at showing how characters relate to one another, the narrative helps connect character to reader. #subtips

The same is true for your character. By showing how they respond and interact with each other, the reader should pick up on what their relationship looks like and means. Friend? Lover? Sworn enemy? Awkward acquaintance? Each relationship has its own unique language and

Happy Friday! I'm listening to some Nina Simone and feelin' good so, I figured why not do some #subtips re: dialogue, narrative, and how each of these function in influencing a reader's experience? #querytip #writetip #amwritingDialogue depicts how one character connects to another character. We all have different ways we communicate depending on who we're with, what environment we're in, as well as how we *emotionally* respond to these things. #subtips

I love rule breakers, but if you break the rules of writing, you've got to do it well. Execution is key. #querytip

Now that this bit of housekeeping is done...

#querytip Don't forget to tell me what your book is about in your query letter. Sample pages are great, but "letting the writing speak for itself" doesn't really work when it comes to querying. I can't judge the execution of your concept if I don't know what it is. #CLAQueries

#querytip Believe it or not, I don't take pleasure in writing rejections as an agent and I always try to be constructive in my emails. I love it when authors return the email with a positive/optimistic reaction and I will actually save their email to a folder.

Ways agents can tell you didn't write your own query letter:
-query is in 3rd person
-no name signed at the bottom
-inclusion of multiple publicity links
Please don't do this.

#querytip Make sure to do your research. Due diligence should always come before not after, you query. Make sure you can accurately state the category and genre of your work, and know the industry standards for word count in your genre. It helps to know your own market!

#querytip Be honest! Don't state that your material was requested when it wasn't. :) Your query is your first impression; make it a good one
