Query hot-take: Beauty and the Beast retellings are the new vampires, i.e. 75% of what I see in my inbox. #querytip #pubtip

Bridget Smith @bredalot · 9 Dec 2019

WELL, someone managed to find my personal Gmail address - which none of my clients have bc I don't use it for work - and send a query there. DO NOT DO THIS. It's not a good way to get extra attention; it's a good way to get yourself blocked on all my accounts. #pubtip

Reminders for #amquerying

The synopsis doesn't matter so much as long as you have the main plot points and you spoil the ending.

The query, as long as you try, won't be rejected if it's not perfect. We just want to know the hook and what the book is about.

Don't worry if you don't have a huge platform or writing credits in huge publications. Flaunt what you do have, and don't downplay yourself. I'm interested in the writing most of all.

NDAs are not so common in book publishing and 99% of instances where I’ve been asked about one did not warrant it. #protip #pubtip #workingwithagents

Catching up on some queries and wanted to share a quick #querytip: calling your manuscript "recently finished" or "just completed" might actually be doing you a disservice, since it implies you haven't taken the time to edit. Agents don't need to know when you wrote it!

November 2019 #querystats as promised!:
-250 queries (addressed directly to me)
-14 requests
-52 manuscripts in the To Read queue

It's December 2nd, and I'm now closed to queries for a little bit: if you've got one for me, please hang on to it until the new year! #querytip

Dear Writers,

Congrats to those who hit the NaNo finish line! Now that it’s over, please put that MS away. Forget about it for at least a month. Then take it back out and revise. Find critique partners and revise. Polish it again and again. THEN start querying agents. #pubtip

Reminder for #amquerying writers. It's important to follow submission guidelines. At Prospect we ask for a synopsis & I do actually read them. So if your submission doesn't have one it is rejected. I need to see where your story is going before I can commit to reading #Querytip

#querytip I only represent SFF in the adult category right now. Please don’t send me adult books in other genres and call them YA; I know the difference

A Saturday #QueryTip for you all... Romance, Mystery, SFF, whatever! The best place to research query writing is by reading the backs of other books in your genre. You’ll learn different ways to structure, phrase,… instagram.com/p/B5gNyBTgR7r/…

If you achieved your #NaNoWriMo goals, congratulations! (And it doesn’t have to be 50K words.)

But... take your time & revise your draft BEFORE querying, please!

Yes, sometimes I respond to queries super fast (thank you for all the disgruntled comments/emails). But this is not an indictment of your writing, I simply know right away I'm not a good fit for it, meaning I wouldn't do a good job representing it. #askagent #querytip

Throwing in another evergreen #querytip today: Consider the text density of your query. Try to make it easy on my eyes to scan through for your pitch.
