#askagent What's the best way to approach the cover letter?90% about the book, 10% about you. Elevator pitch, blurb and some comps. I've actually just written a blog post featuring my own made up subs letter and I'll post it after! #AskAgent

#askagent What's the best way to approach the cover letter?I suggest a simple and straightforward introduction to you, your writing and the project. So three paragraphs max. #AskAgent

@mushenska #askagent Do you get much input on what a book cover will be or is it purely down to the author?Covers are decided by publishers although authors are consulted. I often input into book cover discussions because they are so important to a book's eventual success. This is an area an agent can make a huge difference on behalf of the author. #AskAgent

@UweStenderPhD Ideal word count for YA contemporaryI don't know. Maybe 70-75 k, but it depends on the project.

@UweStenderPhD Is it possible to get an agent for a series if you self publish the first book?Maybe, if sales of that book are really big.

@UweStenderPhD What are your thoughts on upper MG -- on the market for it and its place in kidlit? It has a place, for sure.

@UweStenderPhD What are the top 3 things you look for in a manuscript before you offer? There's only one thing: the feeling that I can't let go of it. I want to read it more than do anything else I could possibly do.

@UweStenderPhD I love that you do these, I get so much out of them. Is there anything you really feel writers need to know?Never forget that in a client/agent relationship YOU are the boss. If your agent does not respond to you reliably, move on.

@UweStenderPhD What's your personal view on the market regarding adult books about characters in their 20s/in college? Or do you see that as irrelevant and the story itself is the only thing that matters to the market?I personally see it as irrelevant, as I love those stories. Apparently, the powers-that-be disagree with me.

@UweStenderPhD Do you ever ask an author to revise and resubmit after reading a manuscript or is it more a yes/no thing?Sometimes I ask. But even if I don't, I remain open to improvement!

@UweStenderPhD Is there anything specifically that you really, really want to see?A perfect rom-com. I offered on a perfect rom-com recently, but the author picked someone else. So I still want one.

@UweStenderPhD @RedPenKaitlyn Does POV need to be switched every other chapter if its Dual or is it alright to switch when the story calls for it? Are there steadfast rules?I don't think there are steadfast rules, no.

@UweStenderPhD Middle Grade...what are the pubs asking for these days? (I won't ever write for trends, so it's more out of desperate curiosity). :)It is wide open. Nothing super specific.

@jounwin @mushenska @julietpickering I’ve written an epic fantasy that’s getting great reviews from beta readers (unknown to me), but it is 136,000 words in length. How strict would you say word length guidelines are for Agents and publishing? #AskAgentIt's okay for epic fantasy, though can still be tricky in translation as translated books are even longer than in english #AskAgent

@mollykh Thanks, I appreciate the information. I've found it hard to 'read' them sometimes. Obviously a rejection, but was never quite sure if they were putting anything else below the surface. As in, fix this in your work. But good to know it's essentially just a polite not for us.Literary Agent

@lisaorchard1 @mushenska Nope. 160K words = nightmare to sell translation rights (German, e.g., adds another 25% to the word count) & retailers often complain that YA novels over 100K or so are too long to interest customers. For a debut, I wouldn't consider sending it out at that length. #askagentLiterary Agent

@mollykh @mushenska Thank you. It is a dual POV so that's why it is so long. #askagent Would that make a difference?Nope. 160K words = nightmare to sell translation rights (German, e.g., adds another 25% to the word count) & retailers often complain that YA novels over 100K or so are too long to interest customers. #askagent Hello...Does it really take 12 weeks etc. for agents to make offer of rep/ request a full MS if they really like the work? Thank u!Yes. I can never read submissions as fast as I would like given the time I have to spend on my client's work too. And at the moment I am more behind then usual. #AskAgent

@mushenska Thanks for your reply. I was worried because the contributors to the discussion seemed to regard it as true, 'but who cares if it's lowbrow - I love reading them anyway.'there are absolutely definitely literary first person POV novels! #AskAgent
