Kieran McMurchy @kieranmcmurchy

@UweStenderPhD When reading a submission, how much of your decision is based on where you think the book fits in the market vs. how much the writing/story sparks an interest?
Replying to @kieranmcmurchy

I am focused on what I love. BUT, as I am evaluating it, if I cannot come up in my mind with at least 10 editors who I think might love it, I won't offer rep, because I don't like the odds.

Katy Lapierre ✨ @KatyLapierre

@BookEndsJessica #askagent What is your general stance on new adult? Do you consider it a legitimate age category?
Replying to @KatyLapierre

I don't know whether I'd say legitimate or not. Market wise it just hasn't sold that well. Most new adult is now selling either as YA or Adult. #askagent

Kate Barber @kathrynmbarber

@jmcgowanbks @AliceArley @BookEndsJessica Is this true of novel/story manuscripts as well? I’ve heard the same about agents wanting novelists that aren’t one-time deals, but heard another say she would only want to hear about one without mention of others completed. Matter of opinion or general advice? #askagent
Replying to @kathrynmbarber

Not exactly. For a novel submission, I’m primarily looking at that one novel, but it can be helpful to know what else has been completed or what’s in the works. But I’ll ask about those when I need to know more, there’s no need to mention it in the query. #askagent

Lisa T. Joyslin @lisatjoyslin

@BookEndsJessica What are some things that pull you from “hm, could be interesting” to “requesting now!” in a query/opening pages? #askagent
Replying to @lisatjoyslin

This is so different for every agent and often comes down to personal preferences & an #MSWL. Some recent ones for me--setting it in Alaska, food-related, bookish books, big twists, settings outside of the US... to name a few.

Jasmin Nyack @101mystic

@BookEndsJessica #askagent is having dyslexia an issue with getting representation if they are at least trying to tidy up the grammar/spelling?
Replying to @101mystic

Dyslexia won't hold you back from publication (I have a bestselling client who's dyslexic), but if grammar feels like a struggle, then consider finding a critique partner, beta reader or hiring a professional to help you polish your work before sending it to agents #askagent

mynewjersey.online @vsam90807591

@BookEndsJessica #askagent I see lots of companies/individuals offering to edit books for a hefty sum prior to submitting a query. Is this recommended or does the editing take place after an agent has taken on your project?
Replying to @vsam90807591

It's best to have the most polished manuscript possible before submitting to agents, but not absolutely necessary to pay a professional to get you there. Some agents are more editorial than others, but it's always a good idea to send them your strongest, cleanest work. #askagent

Kristin Kisska, Author @KKMHOO

@BookEndsJessica #askagent Hi. I just watched your vlog on writing synopses. I always they should be factual (plot point 1 happened, then 2), but you recommended using your voice. Can you suggest a good example of one? Thanks!
Replying to @KKMHOO

If your voice is funny it should be light. If you're writing dark suspense it should be dark. It should show a shortened version of the story and not just tell This happened, then that, then that. #askagent
