@wordisdiversity @SaraMegibow Question for Sara - If an agent decides to represent an author, what is expected of the author to get the book ready for submission to publishers?Agents have different processes so this answer only applies for me:
If there is editorial work to be done on the manuscript, we do that first. Then, I put it on submission.
If no edits needed, I just put it on submission and nothing else is expected of the author. #AskAgent

Instead, try starting with your character doing something they are good at. Showing a character in their element (whether they succeed or fail) gives readers so much more information about who they are, what matters to them, and their place in the world. And remember that this is just one suggestion! There are a million places you can start your story! What's important is that you pick the one that works best for your story, and not just because Writing Advice said it was the place to start. #writingtips #askagent

@LindaEpstein Is it ever okay to re-query an agent if the manuscript has gone through extensive revisons? For example, if there were a few major plot points that were stated in a blurb, that doesnt exist anymore. Chracters have been mushed into one. The title changed. Etc.Woof. If it has been more than six months and it’s a MAJOR revision... sure. #AskAgent

@LindaEpstein Agents/publishers in general always seem to be looking for MG. Do you think this includes nonfiction for middle grade readers? If so, what’s in demand or trending? Thank you in advance. #askagentI’d say it includes nonfiction UNLESS they specifically say Fiction only. And, timely topics (feminist, social justice, etc), STEM, and history/bio about lesser-known folks/topics that can still clearly tie into curriculum. #AskAgent

@literaticat @LindaEpstein #askagent When requesting additional PB manuscripts from a potential author/client (after the lead story query), 1) how many do you typically ask for and 2) are you looking to see the range of someone's portfolio, strength of portfolio, both, other?1) I’ll ask for “two or three” — 2) I just want to know you have more than one great idea and high quality work. #askagent

@LindaEpstein What does "high concept" mean???😁If you can describe something in a super quick nutshell to an agent, whose eyes then turn into dollar signs — that’s high concept. 🤑 “Pride and Prejudice meets Terminator.” “Anastasia in Space.” “Time-traveling Golden Retreiver.” #AskAgent

@Megan_Manzano So I’m working on cutting my word count. How much is too much for you to give a look for an MG urban fantasy? I’m currently down to 68k and hoping to be around 63k when finished. Thanks!MG fantasy is tricky but I don't see 63k being a problem! It can fall in the 60k range.

David and/or Megan 1. Could you suggest some guidelines for how to choose comps? Am I looking for similar story elements? Voice? Other?2. if an agent doesn't specifically ask for them, is it okay if I leave them out? #askagent #writingcommunity
Thanks for doing this!
This is a fantastic article that answers these questions and gives examples.

@CorineMekaouche This is a great question! So normally a writer doesn't have two agents. Any agent who offers and youre considering signing with, there should be a discussion of what you're working on/what you want to work on in the future. (1/?)#askagent #writingcommunity
You can query your stories to the appropriate agents but I'd def make sure if offered rep an agent is interested in what you write as a whole since they're supposed to be an advocate for your work and career.

@Megan_Manzano Hi Megan! If an author has two manuscripts (a YA book and a MG book), would they query two different agents? Is it possible for an author to have two agents or you can only sign with one? Just curious. This is a great question! So normally a writer doesn't have two agents. @UweStenderPhD @thewritinghippo Are there extra hoops to jump if you don’t live in the West? Does it affect one’s chances of getting an agent/publisher?Not with me. I cannot speak for others.

@UweStenderPhD @thewritinghippo I do have a question. There seems to be conflicting info out there on whether you should mention in your query if you've been published say by a small independent publisher in the past (5+yrs. ago). I was told that would work against an author in querying now.I don't think it helps, but I don't think it hurts, either.

@UweStenderPhD @WriteOnCon Will do! I’ll start querying at the end of the summer! I know Ask an agent is done but last question: that synopsis and query letter writing process is almost harder than writing the book. Tips on voice for each and how to make it the best?I don't require a synopsis, and I like short queries. There are plenty tips googleable, best of luck!
