@marchsoloway What are things you look for in a query letter? #okscbwichatSorry I missed this question earlier. I like to see a well-written pitch with a great hook, a brief bio with info relevant to the project and writing, and a few comps to show where the project might fit in the market--followed by a fabulous writing sample. #okscbwichat

@litbeing @marchsoloway @NealShusterman Loved the first book in the Scythe series. Can't wait to read number two. #okscbwichatI think it's even better than book one. And I cannot wait for the final SCYTHE book! #okscbwichat

@litbeing @marchsoloway #okscbwichat How long does it typically take a picture book to hit the shelves after it has been sold? Thank you both for doing this tonight! Appreciate you taking the time!It depends on many factors, like finding an illustrator, etc., but if all goes to plan, about two years from the time we close a deal. #okscbwichat

#okscbwichat @marchsoloway When I finish a book I am usually knee deep in my next by the time I query and begin getting answers back. Should I mention the next book in the query even if it is not the same series, but is the same genre i.e. YA FantasyYou can mention it in a quick line without too much detail. #okscbwichat

@marchsoloway what typically triggers a request for revision? #okscbwichatMarvelous potential + my vision of a way to elevate the story. #okscbwichat

@marchsoloway What are you currently reading or what book have you read recently that you absolutely loved? #okscbwichatWell, I read HEY KIDDO last week, which I loved. I also read LOOKER, by Laura Sims and THE NEED, by Helen Phillips (adult projects) & loved the writing in both. I'm especially in love with the SCYTHE series by @NealShusterman. He's a master at the top of his craft! #okscbwichat

@marchsoloway What are some things that make you stop reading a query letter? #okscbwichatRudeness, I suppose. Or something hateful. But if you mean typos, I'm forgiving. Soloway is a tough name. It sounds like it should be spelled with an "a" or double l's. #okscbwichat

@litbeing @marchsoloway #okscbwichat Would you represent someone who is already self-published? Thanks!Yes, depending on the book and what their new project is. #okscbwichat

#okscbwichat @marchsoloway What do you do to help your writers get over blocks or the "imposter syndrome" so many authors suffer from? (Bonus points if the answer involves ice cream)I see myself as a cheerleader for my clients. Publishing is a tough business with a lot of rejection. I try to boost my clients when they're feeling down with lots of pep talks and reminders that I believe in them. #okscbwichat

@litbeing @marchsoloway #okscbwichat I have multiple picture books I've written, when querying a picture book manuscript should I mention there are others? Thanks Valerie and Jennifer!Yes. If I like a #PB manuscript, I will ask the author to send 2-3 more projects. I want to see they have multiple stories that we might sell together. Not every #PB sells, and it's good to have many projects ready to go. #okscbwichat

#okscbwichat When reading manuscripts do you have a fave snack or place to go to read (do you leave the house or stay in? Coffee or tea (mine is hot cocoa no matter the time of year)? socks or slippers? Pandas or Otters? Which HP house? Are you coming to Nashville any time soon?Ha! I like to read in the bathtub, where I have privacy and quiet. I also read at my desk, in the car, on the sofa, in the grocery line--everywhere. And I'm a big coffee drinker--with milk, no sugar. #okscbwichat

@marchsoloway When you decide to offer representation, what comes next? What can an author expect from you as an agent? #okscbwichatWe will talk about their projects and strategize the best ways to attain publication. Sometimes, we work editorially together first and then go on submission. Sometimes, an author will have a deal in hand, and I will negotiate, etc. It's case by case. #okscbwichat

Okay, really my last question(s)!1) What do consider your strength(s) as an agent?
2) When considering a client, how do you decide whether you’d benefit a potential client by becoming their literary partner? What are you taking into consideration?
Thanks.
#okscbwichat
I think my strengths are my editorial skills and my communication skills, which includes transparency. I am looking for a partnership, and I want it to be the right fit, a win-win for us both. #okscbwichat

@marchsoloway My biggest fear is mustering up the strength to query a dream agent only to be rejected. Is it okay to continue submitting new manuscripts to an agent you like if they have turned you down in the past? #okscbwichatI cannot speak for all agents, but with me, no means not yet. Our agency accepts significant revisions after 6 months, and I encourage you to take advantage and revise. Sometimes (usually) it takes more than one revision, and if it's good, I'll want it. #okscbwichat

@UweStenderPhD I just broke away from making dinner because I thought of a question.Does it weigh more heavily in an author's favor if they mention they are part of orgs like SCWBI or RWA in their queries?
Not to me, but maybe.

@UweStenderPhD What number of sales must one reach to be considered "successful" (paperback, hardcover, e-book)? Thank you. #askagentI don't know. Too many intangibles...advance level, genre, etc, etc.

@UweStenderPhD Do you send to an agent before you send to an editor or is it the other way around? I would think it would be editor then agent? #askagentMost publishing houses won't accept unagented queries, so you would try an agent first.
