@UweStenderPhD I have heard that the book should be able to “stand on its own,” but what does that look like for you? I’m having a hard time conceptualizing how a book could stand on its own and also have a cliffhanger!Go to Netflix, watch the entire season of Babylon Berlin, and when you finished the last episode, you will know exactly. 100% guaranteed.

@UweStenderPhD What's the most difficult aspect of being an agent that most aren't aware of? What makes a 'good' or 'difficult' author for an agent?Wow. I cannot answer the first one. There is too much. People don't really know unless they have done this job for a while. I don't sign 'difficult' authors, I weed them out before I would offer.

@UweStenderPhD Do all agents at Triada US accept LGBTQ literature? Also, how many times can you drop the f-bomb before a book is no longer considered "young adult?"Yes we do, why wouldn't we? I have no idea about the amount of use of the f-bomb.

@UweStenderPhD Okay I’m gonna go ahead and get another one out there bc I am running out the door. Thanks in advance! When pitching a duology, is it best to pitch the conflict arc of the series or stick to talking about the first book?Focus on book 1.

@UweStenderPhD When I am rejected by agents, should I send emails thanking them for their time? Or is the best thank you of all no more emails from me? 😂You don't have to, just query them with your next book. And it is NOT you who is rejected, just This.Particular.Manuscript.

Literary Agent
Berinna Chambers @happywriter2017
@UweStenderPhD How do you know when your manuscript is perfect and ready to query? When you really cannot improve it further, and any further revisions are based on obsessive perfectionism or procrastination to query it.

@UweStenderPhD Jumping off from my last question, is it better to pitch a YA book that’s too long (130k) and split it if asked, or go ahead and split it now and pitch as a duology?I don't know. And I don't know the book...130 k is mighty long though.

Literary Agent
Shereen Cook @ShereenCook
@UweStenderPhD Is it a turn-off to pitch a duology when the first book ends in a cliffhanger and cannot stand on its own?Not a turn off, but the book should stand alone with the cliffhanger inducing more want to read feel in the reader, but not leave the reader frustrated.

@UweStenderPhD What’s on your MSWL for YA beyond good writing and story telling?Really that is all I want. Genre etc is irrelevant to me. Surprise me.

Kira Hawkins @KiraHawkins7
@UweStenderPhD Do you have any advice for young authors? The same as I have for old writers: hone your craft, write a great book, be open to critiques, and don't let naysayers bring you down.

@UweStenderPhD Hi, Uwe. Hope you had a nice day. What do you think of a really short ( 1-2) page chapter in a book?Fine by me. And thank you, every day is a good day.

M Molloy @mzmolloy
@UweStenderPhD I really struggle because my characters are unlikeable. Do you have any thoughts on unlikeable characters? (I realise this is a broad subject.) Thank you! ☺️Well, make them likeable. Give a "villain" a reason why they are the way they are. Killmonger in the Black Panther movie is the antagonist, but I liked him. Or Dexter is a serial killer, but we root for him.

@BookEndsJessica #askagent If a writer receives great feedback from Beta readers, how can they use that information to entice an agent. The thriller is a great read and I would love to find an agent who wants to read it.They really can't. Agents will make their own decisions based on experience, preferences, and market knowledge #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagentIf B&N eventually folds, what exposure advantages will trade publishers offer authors to fill in the gap?
I can't imagine there are answers to that yet. Certainly the best, and most amazing, answer would be the rise of indie bookstores. #askagent

Q from @belle_inreality: How do retellings work? If you aren’t using the same names or locations but the plot is clearly a reworking of Famous Story X, do you need permission? I’m thinking more fairytales and classic novels. #askagent #askeditorIf the book/story is in the public domain you don't need permission. Retellings also don't need to be so close, or even use names or locations. Help! someone out there can come up with a list of great retelling examples. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent A lovely agent has been subbing my upmarket suspense. This isn’t her usual product and she’s approaching literary publishers. I haven’t signed anything, so wondering if I should approach agent used to this genre? You can definitely try to approach another agent, but I would first separate from this agent and get a clear idea of what she's done for you. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent A lovely agent has been subbing my upmarket suspense. This isn’t her usual product and she’s approaching literary publishers. I haven’t signed anything, so wondering if I should approach agent used to this genre?Hmmm. You haven't signed anything? That worries me/confuses me. If the book is shopped, it's shopped. It's going to be difficult to find an agent willing to take on something that's already been seen by, presumably, many places. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica If an agent you are querying asks to see what other work you have, how complete should this other work(s) be? How many other work(s) should a writer have ready? Thank you! #askagentI guess it depends what you're sending, but I'd always make sure it's best foot forward. I know asking to see more is common with #PB, not as common in adult. I'd only send what you feel is ready for an agent to see #askagent
