@BookEndsJessica #askagent In general, if an agent has seen & rejected a full, is considered bad form to re-query that same agent if there has been a major revision if there was no R & R though issues they pointed out have been addressed?I always appreciate a second chance at things. Why not? The worst that happens is a rejection. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent Published first novel with a small press, sales less-than-stellar. Should I claim this novel when I publish again? Much of my blog is based on itI don't think you can hide it or pretend it doesn't exist if that's what you're asking. So I'd just own it. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit If an agent asks to see more of your work after liking a project (specifically speaking picture books here, but i suppose it could be for anything) and you submit it, how long should you give them to review it all before you follow up? #askagentEven with a resubmit I would defer to whatever timeline they list on their website. We list ours here: bookendsliterary.com/faqs/ #askagent

@BookEndsJessica One more question if I may... any common pitfalls in the cover letter or synopsis to avoid? #askagentI would focus on keeping it professional and writing a super strong blurb. If you do those two things you can't really lose. #askagent

✨Moniza Hossain✨ @moniza_hossain
@BookEndsJessica In your professional opinion do you think it's a bad idea for Writers to use non-English words in a fantasy book with an Asian setting? #askagentNo. In fact, I think if you have an Asian setting using non-English words makes perfect sense. The key, of course, is to use them in a way that readers can understand without extensive translation. #askagent

Rosalyn Ransaw @RosalynRansaw
@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit How does writing/querying a graphic novel work if you’re not also an illustrator? Or is it generally more of an “author/illustrator” only thing? Thanks! #askagentHmmm. Graphic novels are not my expertise. I'm going to defer to @inthesestones on this one. I suspect at some point she'll pop in to answer #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What kind of things are you open to? Is ya fantasy one of them? #askagentI am not personally looking for YA Fantasy, however many agents at @bookendslit are. You can find out more on our website bookendsliterary.com/submissions-2/ #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What kind of things are you open to? Is ya fantasy one of them? #askagentI am looking primarily for adult fiction & nonfiction--suspense, thriller, mystery, women's fiction, upmarket, literary & general fiction and many sub-genres of all of those. #askagent

Claudie Wilson @cawilsonaz
@BookEndsJessica On the issue of comps in queries - I've done extensive research, but my novel is so different (on purpose) from anything I can find. Will a strong pitch be enough, or do I need a comp that might not be on point? Thanks! #askagentI do not think comps are ever necessary. They can be helpful, but the pitch alone should be enough #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit Oh yay! I have a question. If you've queried agents with one story, but while you're waiting to hear back, receive an offer for another story, should you let the agents that you queried know? (hope that was understandable) #askagent

@NaomisLitPix I’m getting ready to query again. Is this a good time, or are agents ready for spring activities, setting aside reading time? 2. I’ve been revising my Romantic Suspense MS with an amazing mentor. Is it okay to resend to previous agents?Generally, if an agent is "open to queries" it's a good time.
You can re-query most agents unless their website says not to, but be up front and honest that it is a revision and you're hoping they will be willing to take a second look. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix Or generally how far the label extends and what specific things to do to avoid being called Tolkien-esque.Primarily, medieval-Europe inspired, but also the established systems of elves/dwarves/monsters/magic in this regard. #askagent

Tyler Xavier @TylerXavierB
@NaomisLitPix Is there a good breakdown on what "Tolkien-esque" exactly constitutes in fantasy? Does it mean influenced by medieval Europe? Includes creatures one would expect in D&D? Moralism and allegory, like Lewis? I struggle to determine if works like Martin's or Sanderson's fit the labelI'll hesitate on comparing any other authors because remember, the market is a different place for an author w/established fanbase than it is for debut. Famous names w/ followers who have certain expectations of their work have fewer-&somewhat also more-limitations. #askagent /2

Moralism and allegory are less what I'm talking about with this, as they fit into such a wide range of stories, but I'll stress that it must be done wildly differently than seen before. #askagent 1/

@NaomisLitPix One more: would kidlit agents balk at MG from new authors with strictly adult MCs, a la Fortunately the Milk?It truly is hard to sell kidlit with adult MCs. It can be done successfully, true, but this is the exception not the rule. #askagent

#askagent: is there such thing as too many comp titles in your query? is there a standard for this? #amqueryingUse comps that are most accurate. Yes, too many can clutter a query. There's no real rule, but I'd say give 3 comps tops. #askagent

Questions for agents and publishers - what makes a good query? What makes ou want to read an author's manuscript? What irritates you in a query and makes you not want to read an author's manuscript? #askagent, #askpublisher, #amqueryingA good query is concise and tells us the basics, while following our query procedure guidelines.
An irritating query is one that doesn't follow guidelines, or is pretentious/condescending in its delivery. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix If you’ve started querying and you have several fulls out- should you let the other agents know? Or is that too pushy??We always assume other agents are reading. It's challenging to get too many updates on a project we are considering - let us know when you get an offer, and when you need to respond to that offer. #askagent
