Paranormal is a struggling genre at the moment in #SFF & #RomanceBooks. Check out this article that might help in recategorizing your manuscript called "Will Your Subgenre Prevent You From Being Published?" bit.ly/2kYyfMA #TMGTalks

#TMGTalksWhat is the difference between upmarket fiction and commercial fiction?
Upmarket fiction is the marriage of literary & commercial fiction. Examples of such books I have worked on are @KateMoretti1's THE BLACKBIRD SEASON, @NB_Chris's TROPIC OF KANSAS, & @Bard_Queen's THE DRAGON'S LEGACY #TMGTalks

#TMGTalks I asked about Steampunk stories because I find a lot of agents don't seem to be looking for that. Would that be considered historical science fiction now? Please see my other tweet to you. The article I sent explains that #steampunk is a cold genre right now in #bookpublishing so maybe call it something else like gaslight fantasy or gunpowder fantasy #TMGTalks

#TMGTalks What needs to go in a good query letter?A good query letter is a 1-2 sentence hook, followed by a couple of body paragraphs on the manuscript's story description, and last paragraph should be a 1-paragraph author bio, listing relevant writing experience and credentials. It should all fit on one page. #TMGTalks

Which books have you read this year that you wish you had represented? 😀#TMGTalksI think the #MG debut SEE YOU IN THE COSMOS by @jackcheng was one of the most beautiful books of the year. I highly recommend it as a study in structure. #TMGTalks

@Mark_Gottlieb @cynthialamb With "YA on hiatus", if an author already has an established YA readership, would you advise switching genres for future manuscripts? #TMGTalksYou must write what you've set out to do, but with the current landscape in children'd books I suggest writing #YA that's important and unique enough to stand out in today's #bookpublishing marketplace. My colleague @abuckslater is very knowledgeable in this area #TMGTalks

#TMGtalks do you feel online readership/popularity (e.g. wattpad, etc) is a benefit or hindrance when considering a project?Author platform & number of followers, etc. is more important to nonfiction than fiction. Though coming out of the self-pub sphere, 50K+ copies sold definitely helps. From there it's time to start a new series or standalone title with a publisher. #TMGTalks

#TMGTalks how long should an author wait before nudging a TMG agent who has their full? 🤔Every literary agent is different. To express my level of interest, I read as quickly as I can, within a few days to a week, sometimes overnight! I would say no more than a month or two, though. Any longer and he's just not that into you. #TMGTalks

@Mark_Gottlieb Thank you! Sounds good, I definitely have that. I have another question, from my reading it sounds like you're very open regarding submissions but is there any specific genre, spicy elements or content that you're particularly hoping pop up in your inbox? @Mark_GottliebUpmarket fiction (crossroads of literary & commercial fiction). Looking for books that elevate & transcend genre, s/a literary SF, literary fantasy or literary mystery/crime/thriller, etc. #TMGTalks

#tmgtalks What kinds of fiction trends are you seeing? What are editors wanting to acquire? And how large are advances these days? ;-)Upmarket fiction covering general fiction and mystery/crime. Bookstores will carry more of it. YA is on a bit of a haiatus. The average book advance changes depending on the genre and how much excitement there might be around a book so that's a moving target. #TMGTalks

My story is written from two points of view, but 2:1, meaning, 10 chapters= protagonist, 5 chapters= antagonist, should I being mentioning that in my query? #TMGTalks #askagentI don't think the ratio is as important as making clear what it is about these characters, and their story, that will stand out. Make that clear, and mention the multiple POVs, and keep it at that. #TMGTalks

I'm still new to crafting a synopsis and was curious, is it as important to agents as the query or are you more likely to forgive the format of a synopsis? #TMGTalksYour synopsis should be succinct and broken down by Act, usually, but personally, yes - the query is more important. I won't ask for the synopsis unless that initial query letter strikes me. #TMGTalks
