What is the market for fractured fairy tales? #askUpstartI think fractured fairytales can be fun but your take has to be truly unique and fresh because the backlist is so strong in this genre.

If you're unclear on the feedback an agent offers on your full, is it appropriate to email back and ask for clarification? I often find when agents offer feedback I'm not entirely sure what they mean. #askupstartIf they gave specific feedback re something they'd like to see changed in a revision for possible resubmission,
I think it's fine to ask. I think there's a difference between broad feedback (the character needs greater depth) & confusing feedback, if that makes sense.

#AskUpstart @susanhawk : Your bio says you’re looking for "some" nonfiction for children. What type of nonfiction are you looking to find from a writer?I'm open to NF in any category for teens or children. I'd love to see NF in graphic novel form. I really want subjects and themes that haven't already been written about multiple times. I'm especially looking for diverse subjects and creators here. #AskUpstart

I often find when agents offer feedback I'm not entirely sure what they mean. #askupstartA good question, and I'm sure this is difficult for writers. Unless I'm requesting a revise and resubmit, time does not typically allow for me to respond in more detail about why I'm passing. #AskUpstart

I often find when agents offer feedback I'm not entirely sure what they mean. #askupstartFine to email back and ask. That said, I often can't answer, due to the number of queries I receive. If I'm not offering rep, I probably need to move on. But, I don't think it's a no-no to ask. #askUpstart

I have a cookbook proposal I'd like to submit. Should I paste the first 20 pages into the email with my query or just send a query and wait for a proposal request? #AskUpstartI always like to see sample proposal pages with cookbook queries. So yes, include pages, please! #AskUpstart

Do you like rhyming picture books, if the rhyme is truly good? #AskUpstartRhyming texts need to be *fun* to read aloud. Too often the story is contorted to hit the next rhyme.

@susanhawk @PJMcIlvaine Susan actually lines up all the submissions on her desk like chocolates, starting each one with a soft, “Ooooh!” It’s both impressive and slightly concerning. #askupstartAs I always aim to be. #AskUpstart

#AskUpstart I’ve been told to never call an agent. Yet a published author told me it’s okay to call if you get an offer/book deal from an editor. Then it’s okay to call the agent and ask for representation. Do you agree?I'd say that this depends on the agent. I'd rather you email and tell me first, so that we can set up time for a call. #AskUpstart

#askupstart When you like a pitch at a pitch event does that get priority over other pitches in the inbox?I typically review queries in the order in which they were received. #AskUpstart

Is sophisticated language okay in middle grade novels? #AskUpstartSo hard to say without knowing specifics! but I don't think there's any problem with it, depending on what it is and what your story is about. #AskUpstart

What do you think of "quiet" novels? How do you define "quiet?" #AskUpstart"Quiet" isn't really defined in one way, that's in the reader's response. I do want to feel deeply connected, and pulled into a story. For me, something too quiet would fail to do that. #askUpstart

What do you think of "quiet" novels? How do you define "quiet?" #AskUpstartI have a soft spot for "quiet" novels. I define "quiet" as higher emotional stakes and less bombastic plot stakes. #AskUpstart
