What is the market for fractured fairy tales? #askUpstart
Replying to @StephanieSalkin

I think fractured fairytales can be fun but your take has to be truly unique and fresh because the backlist is so strong in this genre.

If you're unclear on the feedback an agent offers on your full, is it appropriate to email back and ask for clarification? I often find when agents offer feedback I'm not entirely sure what they mean. #askupstart
Replying to @spazgirl11

If they gave specific feedback re something they'd like to see changed in a revision for possible resubmission,
I think it's fine to ask. I think there's a difference between broad feedback (the character needs greater depth) & confusing feedback, if that makes sense.

#AskUpstart @susanhawk : Your bio says you’re looking for "some" nonfiction for children. What type of nonfiction are you looking to find from a writer?
Replying to @lynn_rog

I'm open to NF in any category for teens or children. I'd love to see NF in graphic novel form. I really want subjects and themes that haven't already been written about multiple times. I'm especially looking for diverse subjects and creators here. #AskUpstart

A good question, and I'm sure this is difficult for writers. Unless I'm requesting a revise and resubmit, time does not typically allow for me to respond in more detail about why I'm passing. #AskUpstart

Fine to email back and ask. That said, I often can't answer, due to the number of queries I receive. If I'm not offering rep, I probably need to move on. But, I don't think it's a no-no to ask. #askUpstart

So hard to say without knowing specifics! but I don't think there's any problem with it, depending on what it is and what your story is about. #AskUpstart

What do you think of "quiet" novels? How do you define "quiet?" #AskUpstart
Replying to @StephanieSalkin

"Quiet" isn't really defined in one way, that's in the reader's response. I do want to feel deeply connected, and pulled into a story. For me, something too quiet would fail to do that. #askUpstart

I have a soft spot for "quiet" novels. I define "quiet" as higher emotional stakes and less bombastic plot stakes. #AskUpstart
