@GalltZackerLit @erin_michelle_C @LindaRandom @AgentZacker @beth_phelan Yay - hello! I hired an editor (children’s lit prof I knew) after years of slogging away. The experience was excellent and I learned how to write a novel. Should I NOT mention the editor in my query? Thx! 🙂 #askGZLA#amquerying

DONT BE AFRAID TO MENTION IT!!! It’s nothing to be ashamed of. That agent that said that is weird! #askgzla

Thoughts on books with VERY reluctant heroes? Like they weren't born with magic but got it anyway? They didn't train with swords but one is put in their hands anyway? They'd much rather be at Starbucks or reading in the Library than hunting down demons & monsters? #AskGZLAi wanna see all sorts of hero journeys. they need to have motivations for me to care but doesn't mean they have to start off with it tho. #askGZLA

#AskGZLAHere's one we just had a discussion on this week on #kidlitchat. How do you feel about prologues? I can't decide whether or not to have one in my mg novel. I've heard mostly negative things about prologues lately, but this one--I swear--might actually work. Thoughts?
i mean, if it works it works lol. #askGZLA

(Meant to ask this before, lol) A book with a 17-18 y/o MC, would this be considered Upper YA or normal YA? Without NA, would an agent maybe look at the book as Adult? #askgzlai would say "normal" YA, well within the typical age range #askGZLA

Should query's come with content warnings? #askagent #askGZLAspeaking for myself, i wish we could normalize trigger warnings in queries and conference submissions etc. agents/editors are people with trauma sometimes and we think about our own safety too. #askGZLA

Ive been writing a #ownvoices novel where a black girl fights to dismantle systemic racism in a dystopian USA. But I hear dystopian fic is overdone. Should I make my debut novel something else? Market this as sci-fi or ignore the naysayers? #AskGZLAignore. i can feel dystopian coming back. it just looks different. #askGZLA

Is it alright to say "No" to an agent? Like I had an agent who, after reading my pages, suggested I turn it MG and then she'd take a look at it. I know that my book wouldn't work as an MG, but did I do a bad thing? #askgzlanope lol embrace the NO and remember to value yourself and your work and your vision. it's a subjective biz as we always say, so if you don't agree with an edit, say no and find an agent whose vision lines up with yours. #askGZLA

#AskGZLA Thoughts on an author submitting to mid-sized publishers that don't require representation while also querying agents?i always prefer to be the one sending things out so i can secure the author's career from the start. but i also know authors need money. ultimately i would just want them to do their due diligence researched and vetting a contract so they don't sign away anything big #askGZLA

Should I continue pretending to be a straight, clean, professional, level writer trying seeking representation for a collection of essays or can I drop the ruse and start querying ya'll in the voice I really write in? #AskGZLASET YOURSELF FREE #askGZLA

What is the best way to get into traditional publishing? You’ve written your book, now what? #AskGZLAfor trad pub most of the time the next step is getting an agent. but you should also look at critique partners and beta readers so you're in the best position possible to approach agents. #askGZLA

Does a book that handles a mature setting such as racism, bullying, suicide, and dealing with lgbt identity but in a contemp fantasy setting; be seen as "too mature"? Like I hear the market if subjective but if an agent saw this, would it be a turn-off? #askgzlaew, no! kids experience a *lot* of things and they are restricted access to books that they NEED because they're deemed "too mature" so i say bring it. #askGZLA

In researching potential agents for representation, how much value should I give recent deals (or lack of) on publishers marketplace? #askagent #askGZLAi love this question. PM sales are a piece of it but not the whole pie. sometimes it takes a long time to have permission to announce a deal. the quantity of deals also isn't important--it's the quality. also look at the overall *agency*'s sales. #askGZLA

@SCLanggle i think it depends on what it is they are querying. if it's something that could be submitted for an open option, i'd be happy to see a outline with sample chapters. also fine if the author is somewhat well-known (not necessarily bestselling).if they're writing something different i might want a full ms. #askGZLA

Marietta B Zacker @AgentZacker
@RachaelEWrites Ah - that all depends - most of the time they end up in the cutting room floor. Really think hard about whether or not you need that prologue (or is it just how you always hear it so it's hard to give up?). #AskGZLAalternatively, i have submitted mss without a prologue and then the acquiring editor had the author ADD ONE 😂 #askGZLA

Any tips on how to query a book that doesn’t really have a flashy hook? I’ve found it difficult to pitch my comedic YA contemporary because its plot is quiet, doesn’t have a huge romance angle, & is mostly driven by the relationships between its characters...#askagent #askGZLA

#AskGZLA What're the advantages and disadvantages of writing in first person? Do literary agents and editors evaluate retrospective narrative versus third person narrative when considering an author’s work? Is there generally a preference?both can be tricky. first person is very intimate and third gives you so more room and narrative distance but emotional access is built up a different way. so with first, being so close to the POV can be both an advantage and disadvantage. #askGZLA

#askGZLA Any thoughts on querying a short-story collection and a novel at the same time (not in same query or necessarily to same agents)? Any reason I should wait on one?i would say put your best foot forward but be ready to talk about the other. i would also suggest thinking about how you want your agent relationship to look like--do you want separate agents? or someone who would rep both? #askGZLA

#AskGZLA What does it mean when an agent says “I did not connect with the voice “. Does this mean they just didn’t like it and there’s not much the author can do to change in the writing?not necessarily. voice can be subjective and sometimes more about THE WAY you are telling the story and whether they are into that. and sometimes it's just a gut thing. or something altogether. i think it means different things to different agents. #askGZLA

Hi #AskGZLA can i ask if one of you receives a submission and you see potential but it’s not to your taste, will you pass it on to another agent you think might like it? Thanks #askagentif it's another agent at GZLA yes! we wouldn't want to miss out. however, i don't typically share with agents outside my agency #askGZLA
