I have a hard time telling a good fit for me from a pitch anyway, so check out sub guidelines #DVpit https://t.co/YXpeo31IuK

What I'm looking for: MG/YA novels & graphic novels starring POC. Check out any #MSWL tweets from me & sub guidelines for more info. #DVpit

Adding to this: Thinking abt Pacific Islander stories in particular--big gap there in general, but large # of PIs are Mormon. <cont>

Would love to see that intersection in MG/YA stories. Point being: intersection of identity, faith & genre can make awesome stories. #MSWL

The predominant language spoken in the LDS Church is Spanish. I would love to see a #YA starring a South American LDS teen #MSWL

So much potential for stories we don't see in MG/YA. Just as we see Jewish, Catholic, Evangelical POVs, we need Mormon POVs. #MSWL

Most of my BYU roommates were POC, from other countries but also US. While majority of US Mormons are white, majority of church is POC.

Generally when I see pitches for Mormon protagonists, they're always white. Writer friends, I want to see this change. #MSWL

Latinx kidlit right now is still mostly Mexican and Cuban. That HAS to change. Publishing, take note.

I am actively looking for Latinx books that bring other perspectives to the table. #MSWL #NewVisionsAward https://t.co/JYrcEYT2Yg

Spied on Davis for years, huge asset to Union. She also tried to BURN DOWN the Confederate Capitol. ✊ … https://t.co/2ypzXnkzpa

#MSWL Any of my #NewVisionsAward entrants going to be a historical fiction/thriller about this amazing woman? Maybe… https://t.co/2CYPqivf4i

So when I say I want institutional appeal in my #MSWL , you can write an epic fantasy with institutional appeal. It just needs to be complex.

And what that complexity looks like is broad and deep. #MSWL

Stacy Whitman @stacylwhitman · Jun 8

<it's also complex text--poetry, prose & primary sources from time period (newspapers between chapters) & readers must decide who's right

<but INSTITUTIONALLY the book is a retelling of THE ODYSSEY, covers many family-centric themes, & delves into Mexican folklore.

Teachers can directly pair SUMMER OF THE MARIPOSAS with THE ODYSSEY in a classroom setting. #MSWL

Obviously the point is to tell a STORY first. But when we sell into schools they also wonder how books support learning. #MSWL

When looking at MG/YA fiction, that means what about the story sparks discussion? #MSWL

Stacy Whitman @stacylwhitman · Jun 8

For example theme include incarceration, LGBT families, bullying, persistence/grit, health and nutrition, math application in real world.

Now, specifically what that looks like as far as stories go, institutional appeal is a broad brush. That might mean many things. #MSWL

Our literacy team is often looking for how our books meet certain educational themes. Examples in next tweets: #MSWL

If you wanted a crime thriller on the rez, Erdrich's The Round House would be devastating. I'd watch that x10000.

@RoanhorseBex Related, I've had a mystery-solving Indigenous MG or YA on my #MSWL for a while, because yes.

Stacy Whitman @stacylwhitman · May 24

I....might write woke Black farmer romance at some point https://t.co/SB4q2IM4bz I think you can understand why

@Karnythia <and now that's a big reason one of my #MSWL items is diverse rural settings for young readers.
