I see. Well,I don't speak for other agents, but I would not request a 400k word book subbed to me. I need word count of the book I will ask to read: bk 1, if a series. I don't need total series wordcount in query, nor all requested books sent at once b4 I've read first. #querytip

So if you are querying me with a picture book, just know that I don't rep adult books, so if you also want to write thrillers, then consider that I might not be the best fit for you overall. #querytip

High word count doesn't deter me from requesting manuscripts unless it's over 200k, but it's pretty easy to see in 1st 3 chapt if words are used wisely. #querytip

Writers, it's important to know your critique partners' strengths and weaknesses, just like you know your own. If you need a line edit--which I would argue almost everyone does, especially before querying--make sure you're working with a CP who can provide that. #querytip

Writers. When we suggest your debut be under 100k, it’s not an arbitrary rule. Publishing is a business with a bottom line. A debut is a financial gamble. Books over 100k cost more to print, store, ship, thus a publisher will be less willing to gamble on your 180k tomb. #pubtip

#QueryTip Before you query, check the opening pages. Does your opening line raise a question? Does the story start in scene? Are the stakes clearly established? Make sure you engage the reader (agent). #amwriting #amquerying
