@leonicka One of my questions would be, can we email the agents asking for more specific examples in their wish list? Iāve seen agents who have ācommercial fictionā in their lists, but know for a fact some genres they donāt actually like.Literary Agent

@leonicka Do I have to move to Canada for you to be my agent? ššSeriously, this looks like a great conference. I'm preoccupied with finishing MS to query WITH. I can't think of any questions right now.
GREAT QUESTION! Answer is NO! Especially in the internet age it doesnāt matter where your agent lives only that they have the necessary expertise to sell in the territory you want your book to be published. #askagent #publishingtips

What do you think of marginalized folks trying out dead tropes/genres? Are the dead-dead genres still dead no matter what? I'm asking mostly for adult! #askDVPitLove tropes! They exist & endure because they work! Endlessly interesting ways to tap into, explore, subvert tropes from a marginalized pov. Publishing is too quick to declare a genre "dead-dead" when we've only pushed out one (read: white/euro/straight/cis) version #askdvpit

In "about the author bio" -- what do you think is the best way to approach it? Simple like like being a stay-at-home parent or listing your educational background? #askDVPitYou can show off personality here, writing credentials, awards, the like! Donāt go too lengthy, but itās our way to see you as a person apart from just the author #askDVpit

Ah I love multi-genre writers! First, I would recommend choosing where your heart is for your debut. Pick a genre you know you want to work on first and also aligns with your future agent. Then talk to them (before you sign) about how well the agent does within other genres 1/2 twitter.com/MilaHailWritesā¦Youāll want to be on the same page w/them so they can continue to foster your career! I wouldnāt reach too far with 6 genres all in a year, but establish yourself in 1-2 areas and then grow as an author and your readership and branch out as you do! Pacing is everything #askDVpit

What are some fantasy tropes/topics you are tired of?#askDVpit
Not tied to only fantasyāIām tired of stories of white ppl in foreign lands being surprised, shooketh, idk about this place/culture that isnāt thereās. Lol I donāt care about their thoughts or discomfort in this situationā¦š¤·š¾āāļø #askDVpit

#askdvpit If an agent passes on your full MS, but is very complimentary regarding querying them on future projects, would it be super tacky to contact them after a major revision on the one they were initially considering?I donāt think itās tacky at all. Just be mindful that you arenāt turning that revision over in a week. Spend time on it, really reflect on it, and allow for the agent to have some distance to and get excited #askDVpit

#askdvpit thoughts on an author website for the unpublished writer. Should I or shouldnāt I create one?Everyone should create a website! I mean, do you absolutely need one before you get an agent? Not necessarily. But it does help give people a sense of your identity, work you can showcase, experiences, aesthetics etc. but they are massively important when you get a deal #askDVpit

Do trans authors and stories with trans main characters have a chance on the adult fantasy market?š¤ Because IF I see representation it's mostly in YA or contemporary atm. #askDVpitI have found that adult fantasy really is shifting. @DVpit_ #askDVpit Iām always curious, when a DV pitch blows up and thereās a lot of agent interest, do things move a little faster for that author in finding an agent? Or does it all happen at the usual pace?I would say it sort of depends because one agent could read immediately and then speed the process along for all of us, but also we all are trying to read and do justice by each other so our speed could be normal compared to a regular full request! #askDVpit

Would it overwhelm an agent if they ask you so you have any other projects and you say over 20? I write at least 2-3 novels a year. #askDVpitI M guessing this is for PB would stick to 1-3 others that fit their wishlist and are relevant. See what grabbed their attention with the first and show off a little range, but donāt overwhelm #askDVpit

It's hard to predict the trajectory of a trend but what is certain is that nothing kills a trend faster than flooding the market with the same tired iteration. Readers grow fatigued with copycats but not an entire genre. If you have a fresh take, go for it! #askdvpit twitter.com/PointsTangent/ā¦Adding on, it's good to have market awareness of a trend. Identify the most prevalent iteration of that trend and distinguish your pitch from it. If XYZ is booming, here's how your book taps into that proven market *and* here's what'll make it transcend any one moment #askdvpit

Look, for pitch events, go HAM on your comps. Have fun. But also realize that they show us how maybe other media, like movies or Broadway hits, work to grab our attention. But truthfully, if you really do comp to a cultural phenomenon in a query it makes me think 1/2 twitter.com/SuperStacey318ā¦That you arenāt caring enough about your own genre/demographic to research & know current work. Twilight, Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games are all great books, but dated and not representative the same now. I highly recommend finding comps from being doing the work NOW #askDVPit

Tangent Points @PointsTangent
#askDVpitHow often do trends lasts or return if they've gone out of favor? For instance, high fantasy or paranormal MCs?
It really depends on the medium. For example in GN, middle grade and YA contemporary and memoir has been hot for YEARS and will continue to be popular for many more. Itās almost evergreen. Other genres have some successes but are less stableābut this will change soon! #askDVpit

#askdvpit If the story behind a myth is not *popular enough* or is localized to a place/region, would the mythical retelling written about it gain less traction by agents/editors?Personally, not for me. I love when writers allow readers to explore worlds, myths, and lore that arenāt as well known. I think itās beautifully refreshing! I actually search hard for them! #askDVpit
