@mushenska @julietpickering Thanks - I wondered, if the query letter says 'women's fiction', the agent groans and paper aeroplanes it directly into the bin as they're inundated with that genre. Do you take a look at first couple of pages of writing everytime? Even for a nano-second? #askagentIt's never genre which turns me off - it might be pitch though #AskAgent

@mushenska #askagent Hi Juliet and thank you! I have a few romance and horror publications under my belt, and am looking to venture into writing MG/YA under a pen name.As an agent, do you shy away from authors looking to venture into new genres? Thanks!
No, several of my authors write in multiple genres! some use pen names to differentiate #AskAgent

@Loverofhats @mushenska Is it acceptable to submit a novel to several agents and publishers (who welcome unsolicited manuscripts) simultaneously, as long as you mention it? Thanks in advance for thisyes it's fine, but update everyone of movement - if you get an offer of publication I'd tell agents #AskAgent

#AskAgent most important things that you look for in a query letter? Personable vs Formal?Short and clear works for me. As well as not addressing me as "Dear Sir,". 😂 #AskAgent

#askagent Is it worth self publishing a MG series to have a sales record for extra recognition from agents?MG doesn't lend itself to self-pub success the way adult crime/romance/sff does. And unless your sales numbers are well into the 10s of thousands, it wouldn't move the needle for me. If you want to publish traditionally, focus on writing/submitting the best book you can #askagent

#AskAgent this is mostly a UK vs US thing, but cover letters/query letters -- same format as each other? As in strong hook, book, cook?Or is the UK cover letter more like you'd get in a CV?
they're the same thing #AskAgent

Half my submissions have resulted in full requests, but the only feedback I’ve had so far has been ‘great writing but not falling in love with it enough.’ Is this a euphemism, or should I keep trying and hoping someone else might love it #askagentSounds like you are getting close. A downer of this job is turning down manuscripts you know are good and will be published but aren't right for you as an agent. That is what prompts me to write the "I like this but I don't love it" type of feedback. #AskAgent

Same as it'd be in the US -- just a difference in terminology. #askagent

@mushenska @julietpickering If you've previously submitted a fantasy novel ( no interest) to an agent looking for general subs, would it be acceptable to submit a general fiction to the same agent? Or is it a case of once they say no, don't bother them again?#AskAgentabsolutely fine to send to the same agent again #AskAgent

@mushenska @julietpickering Hi, would you think I'm am idiot for not knowing exactly how to label my ms? I know clearly what it's NOT, but find the lines between book club / women's / domestic thriller etc. blurry. Just putting together query & synopsis now. Have you read work & taken it when mislabeled? Txyes absolutely - one of my authors submitted her literary thriller under the belief it was YA! #AskAgent

@mushenska @julietpickering I was really taken aback when I heard this comment as it was supposed to be encouraging - and just wasn't so thank you! #AskAgentI worked this out recently and slightly over 80% of my clients came in via unsolicited submissions without referrals from colleagues. 'Slush' is bread and butter for many of us. #askagent

@mushenska @julietpickering I can't seem to nail down one thing I want to write. I want to write, 5-8, 9-12, teen, fantasy, contemporary, romance, literary, horror, fantasy etc etc etc. I want to write EVERYTHING. How do I find a focus? #AskAgent :)I'd start with the project which you most enjoy, and potentially which you most enjoy reading #AskAgent
