#askagent for whoever is taking questions 💕: if you got a rejection from an agent but you think your project could be a good fit for another agent in their agency, is it ok to query them? Or if they reject you is it a rejection from the whole agency ? Is it ok to ask? pic.twitter.com/ac4OSogYI1It depends on the agency. At BookEnds, you can query another agent. But at some agencies, a no from one is a no from all. #askagent

Do agents still make offers in December or is it a dark month? #askagentI’m hearing of a lot of offers being made—and I’m considering making a few myself. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica I’m a day late, but hoping I can still ask. I received a full request about 8 months ago from one of your agents, but no response. I’m not really expecting a reply. Can I query another one of your agents? Thanks so much!!!Yes. If you’re querying the same book though you should either withdraw or let the new agent know you never received a response. Just to avoid confusion. #askagent

@UweStenderPhD Thanks for helping to illuminate the difficult query journey for newbies like myself. Have you ever heard of an agent offering representation based on anything less than a full, i.e. a partial and synopsis? #askagentIf you are Stephen King, John Green, David Baldacci, Malcolm Gladwell, Michelle Obama, Nora Roberts, or Rihanna, I would offer on a sentence. If you are not, then I need a full.

@UweStenderPhD I’ve had two people tell me to say a MS is “a standalone narrative with series potential” rather than “a series opener.” Is that true for you? What if the book really demands a sequel (like a lot of great SFF books!)Yes, it is.

@UweStenderPhD What’s a reasonable amount of time to wait before nudging an agent who has ur full? And is it ok to nudge more than once depending on timeframe? #AskAgentI would say 10 weeks is worth a nudge. If they don't respond, I would follow up every two weeks. If they don't respond to three of those at all, move on.

@UweStenderPhD Good evening! Curious as to your/agents in general timeline's to read/respond to requested material? Or do you only respond if interested? #askagentUsually, we respond to everything. Currently, Lauren is closed to queries as of tomorrow, and *I* will only respond to queries I am interested in until January 15, 2019.

@BookEndsJessica I think the last 5 years (I've seen that it should be from a debut author too) is part of where my struggle lies. Is it okay to pick a book in that realm that has the same outward feel as my MS? Though I read a lot in genre, I only seem to find books that are more partial matchesI think a lot of comps are this book meets this book. #askagent or this book meets this movie.

@BookEndsJessica Super helpful info! I’m not yet represented. I write for various audiences. Kid lit chapter books, MG novels, adult history (fiction and non-fiction.) How likely is it that I’ll end up working with multiple agents vs one agent who likes to work across various audiences? #askagentIt's so hard to predict where your career might take you. It's completely possible you'll have multiple agents. It's also possible you'll find your niche and settle more closely into one thing, or something that fits one agent. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent does author location factor into your decision on a query at all? I’m Querying fantasy/sci-fi from New Zealand. Not at all. @bookendslit represents clients from all around the world, including a number from NZ #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent do y'all bring books you're interested in representing to each other for review? If so, what are those meetings like?Every agency is different. Sometimes we do and sometimes we just offer. If we do ask for second reads on something they become very opinionated and we evaluate everything from characters to plot to ideas to fix things that might need fixing. #askagent

#askagentI was prepping to send a last round of queries for the year, but now I am wondering if I should wait. Do people recommend against querying in December because of the delay around the holidays, or is there an actual New Year cut-off for what can be accepted?
Query when you want to query. I think a lot of agents are closed for the end of the year, but I honestly don't think it matters. Agents will get to the queries when they get to them. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent Thank you for holding this. What are your thoughts on the genre thriller/suspense/mystery? They’re lumped together for sales, but agents seem to have a much more specific set of rules. How do I decode what an agent wants?
I wouldn't overthink it. If an agent wants thriller/mystery/suspense and your book fits, then send it. that being said, there are differences to each of those genres. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Question part 2: what exactly IS a blurb? Is it like a synopsis or is it more specific than that?a blurb is exactly the cover copy for your book. If you're looking at how to write blurbs (or queries) read Query Shark and the cover copy for your comps. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica When you consider offering rep for author's Book #1 and she says Book #2 (finished or in progress) is a different genre, does that negate you trying to sell a 2-book deal? #amrevisingNot for me. I assume that the author will put book #2 aside if needed. I assume this with any book deal. If you're writing a series I don't expect you to be writing #2 before you've sold #1 for example. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What do you look for in a good query letter? #amwritingA great blurb. That's what I want first and foremost. I want to know if it's a book I want to read. That's it. #askagent
