Noreen @noreenlekhak

@GalltZackerLit #AskGZLA If we've had editor interest in pitch events from Big 5 (or 4) do we mention it somewhere? Does it make a difference? Thx!
Replying to @noreenlekhak

Yes mention it! In the end our goal is to sell books, so if editors already like your story, great! Put those things in your query. It might not affect how the agent decides, because the writing is the most important, but your eventual agent will want this info for sub! #askGZLA

Caitlin Cross @caitlincross

Hi! What do you need to see in an R&R that makes you want to offer? Especially if the age category is changing from YA to Adult ๐Ÿ˜Š Thank you! #askGZLA
Replying to @caitlincross

I'd want to see that the writer is capable of addressing my edits in the BEST way for the characters/story. It's their story after all, but all writers need to be able to address critique. I can't help on YA to adult bc I would never ask for that bc I don't rep adult! #askGZLA

Would you want to know in the query letter, if we have worked with an editor on our MS? Does this help a query stand out? Thank you #AskGZLA pic.twitter.com/59dkhPUS5O
Replying to @susanleighneed1

If it's an editor at a publishing house (like you won a contest or they were open to direct submissions) then yes! We'd prob want to submit to them & it's good to hear a pub is interested. If it's a freelance editor, context might be nice but it's all about the writing #askGZLA

Hayley @hsquared20

If an agent really likes your full, but passes bc they donโ€™t think theyโ€™re the right fit for the book, or the market is too saturated, are they likely to refer you to another agent? Or offer rep and put the sub on a back burner? #askgzla pic.twitter.com/eeuvDBDzGd
Replying to @hsquared20

Speaking for myself, it's rare I refer to another agent unless I KNOW it's up their alley. It's hard to give another agent more work, esp. when I passed. I'm not sure if someone would offer rep for future sales potential - more likely they'd ask to see the next project #askGZLA

Replying to @CLaurenAuthor

I think the ghost story train is still chugging along! Sure the market can get saturated, but that should never stop you from telling a story you're passionate about. Realize that fall also always feels saturated with ghosts - that's marketing's job! #askGZLA

How do you feel about a middle grade novel that switched from the main character being a girl in third person, but when she turns into a dragon it's first person?

Replying to @sarakapadia

Sounds potentially confusing, but I wouldn't know for sure without reading! You should definitely have a good reason, some emotional character development that makes this tense change necessary and powerful. If it feels clunky or confusing, then maybe it's not necessary? #askGZLA

Replying to @boonewrites

Maybe slightly old news but lots of editors are looking for NF that focuses on moments, movements, or objects/items/inventions. PB bios work when that person's experience is underrepresented - we need more diverse NF PBs, we're good on the founding fathers! #askGZLA

What is your average # of queries/month and how many full requests and offers of rep does that translate to?
(Thanks @MaliaMaunakea for helping me think of an intelligent question. ๐Ÿ˜„)
#askGZLA
Replying to @JEngelMattern

I've been getting 400-500 queries a month this year (note that agents require different length of samples - our 2000 word sample is shorter than many others). These are guesses but usually about 30-40 partial requests, becomes ~10 full requests, becomes maybe 1 client ๐Ÿ˜ณ #askGZLA

Hayley @hsquared20

For queries, it looks like some agents just want a teaser of the plot, and others want to know the ending including spoilers. If itโ€™s not specified on their submission page/website, whatโ€™s the default? #askGZLA pic.twitter.com/cxItiaCrz6
Replying to @hsquared20

First, this kitten is a mood. Second no spoilers is the default! The end/reveal is something to pull the agent along and they definitely want to be surprised and read the manuscript as a future reader would. They'll ask for a full synopsis prob if they want the end #askGZLA

@GalltZackerLit @erin_michelle_C @LindaRandom @AgentZacker @beth_phelan Iโ€™m having trouble deciding if my MG #WIP is sci-fi or speculative. What would you say are the primary distinctions? #askGZLA
Replying to @mgorgans

I have this problem too! I'd say speculative "speculates" on our world. It changes something big or small about our world and imagines what would('ve) happen(ed). That can be wrapped in a sci-fi which is usually technology based, often with tech that pushing boundaries #askgzla

#askGZLA You are closing to queries 11/27. I have a query hanging in your inbox (sent 10/15) that I haven't heard back about yet (totally understand, people are busy) BUT would you be annoyed if I sent another PB query before the 27th to get it in before you close to subs?
Replying to @LaurenGraceBFYR

No offense meant, but I would be. If I liked your original query I would respond and ask for more manuscripts, and you could share that story with me then. If I pass, I'd prefer you wait to receive that pass to send another project, as we have a one sub at a time rule. #askgzla

#askgzla I queried a book a couple years ago and got a lot of requests, but ultimately no yes. I'm gearing up to query my next project and I'm wondering about query strategy. Do I query those agents that requested my book first, all at once? Batches? Mix in with new agents? Eep!
Replying to @averillelisa

Base your subs on how YOU feel about the agents. Make your list and send it to your favs 1st- whatever feels manageable - no matter if they are brand new or passed on your prior project. And onward down the list. Do not feel any pressure to resubmit - send to your favs! #AskGZLA

Yes? Yes. I think so. It doesn't hurt, only protects, and if the agent is somehow offended by it, they probably aren't right for your work anyway. I guess my only concern is spoilers...hmmm haven't thought about this before #AskGZLA
