Hi! How do agents/editors interpret #ownvoices? Say I’m trans-fem, but my protag is trans-masc, is that #own, even though experiences of power/privilege are really different? Also thinking of controversy w Roanhorse (Navajo vs Pueblo). What are the lines? #askdvpitThis is one of the things that I don't think has a single or even general consensus answer. Different people (writers, agents, editors, readers) will draw different lines for themselves and for what they support from others. #askDVpit

Why is it crucial that all comps be contemporary? For example, if I'm pitching a queer fantasy Jane Eyre, would it not make sense to mention JE in the pitch? #askDVpitThe purpose of a comp is to say "We know this book is marketable b/c X recently published title sold well." It doesn't mean you shouldn't mention JE (you should if you're adapting it!), but your comps would be other recently published adaptations, not JE itself. #askDVpit

I really want to get the concept of a statement like: 'acquired north-american rights' to a book. Does that mean the author can go on to pitch the already worked-on final draft to other agents in, let's say, Europe or Africa?
It generally means that the author reserved rights to the book in English outside the US/Can and all translation rights. AKA the publisher in the US doesn't have them. But if an agent did that deal, they prob rep those rights too and will seek deals in other markets. #askDVpit

How do you know when it's time to give up on submitting a manuscript? (Thank you in advance.)#askDVpit
When you've run out of agents you would be happy to be represented by, no longer believe the story is ready for primetime, or have something stronger to query. Whichever of those comes soonest. Sometimes persistence pays off. Sometimes you know it's time to move on. #askDVpit

Is it possible to have an adult book that centers on teenage characters? I mean in the 17-19+ range. I hear NA isn't a very popular genre atm, and I have two books with protagonists in this age range. #askDVpitThere are adult books about teen (and younger) characters. Protagonist's age is often but not always an indicator of the market the book was written for. #askDVpit

Hello! For a story to be considered #ownvoices in addition to having an author coming from same marginalized community as the protagonist, does the story also need to center around cultural or identity issues? Seen it discussed both ways... #askDVpit Thanks!Like any term, I don't know that there will ever be full community consensus in how it's used, but I don't take it to refer to theme and that's not what it was intended to mean by the person who coined it. Is it a good time to query agents and are Publishing imprints actively acquiring rn? I cut ties with my old agent (mild homophobia and Hinduphobia) last August and focused on school but today’s affairs make me feel it’s best I delay my Publishing endeavours a bit. #askDVpitImprints are acquiring for sure. Agents are reading queries. But I'd advise anyone querying to be patient, thoughtful, and do their due diligence. Some agents are busier than usual. Others have way more time to read. Smaller rounds might be wise. #askDVpit

Hey #AskDVpit!I was using DVpit as my deadline to finish my revisions, but now with covid, I've lost my schedule.
I'd like to be able to send manuscripts week of, but I don't know if that's feasible.
So the question : what do you feel is the window to query after DVpit
Personally I don't have a window, but I'd advise against pitching projects that aren't pretty close to final. You never know what your subsequent revisions will change. That said, if I say I'm interested in hearing more about a project, there's no ticking clock on that. #askDVpit
