@julietpickering @FutureBookshelf @mushenska @katenashagent @RobbieGuillory What do agents really mean when they say "enjoyed reading it but not quite for us"? #askagent
Replying to @OgennaO

It can mean a lot of things - I would say it’s normally meant to be a polite and standard way of saying ‘no’ so within that can mean ‘you show promise but it needs too much work’ or ‘great idea but not executed well enough’ #askagent

TheInevitableAuthor @TheInevitableA1

@julietpickering @mushenska @katenashagent @RobbieGuillory Are submissions always read, or sometimes do you read the cover letter and that is enough to reject? #askagent
Replying to @TheInevitableA1

Sometimes I reject based on the cover letter - I would say an average cover letter is fine (it doesn’t need to be WOW!), but some highlight crucial issues with the plot/genre/writing level #askagent

Jrussellwriter @jrussellwriter

#askagent what does the standout pitch have that the slush pile pitches don't?
What are the must mentions in the pitch, and does the style/the way the pitch is presented have catch your attention in order for you to read the MS and Synopsis? Is the pitch make or break?
TIA!
Replying to @jrussellwriter

So ‘slush pile’ literally just means ‘unsolicited submissions’, it isn’t mean to sound derogatory! I would say that the pitches which attract my attention most quickly have a clear hook (like... We Need to Talk About Kevin or Room!) but the writing is obv key too #askagent

Chris Basha @BashaChris

@mushenska Thank you for your reply! Is there something I could do to compensate for the lack of audience or is that really the only way?
Replying to @BashaChris

unless you have a really specific link to the story or very unusual hook into it, it will definitely be challenging with non-fiction. The good news is you don’t need a platform at all if you write a novel! #askagent
