@mushenska #askagent do you need to have written a full novel to approach an agent? Or can you go ahead with a sample of your writing? Thank you!For fiction, you need a full and polished manuscript #askagent

How long should we follow up with an agent regarding a response on a submitted query before moving on to another agent/publishing house? #askagentI'd suggest submitting in batches of 8-10 - if someone hasn't got back to you when they say they will, I'd politely nudge #askagent

Alexandra Wilson @amwilson_opera
@julietpickering @LovelessAge @emilyinkpen Do you mean that it's OK to approach more than one agent at a time? I presumed you'd need to try one, wait, then try another. #askagentNo you can submit to multiple - I'd suggest batches of 8-10 at a time #askagent

Is there a cliche you see over and over again in the initial pages that turns you off a submission? I.e. exposition#askagent
I would say exposition-dumps are very common, especially in fantasy novels, and I'd rather the information came through organically in dialogue or action #askagent

#askagent You still interested in a novel dealing with ancient greece?yes! I sold one last year and love the period #askagent

If you’ve met with + been offered representation by someone who’s interested in your work - but you didn’t personally like them, should you go with them anyway (to avoid missing the opportunity) or hold out for someone you think you’d work with better? #askagentI tend to think if you didn't like them it's not going to be a good relationship! I wouldn't want to work with someone I didn't like #askagent

Hiya, are there genuinely lots of pandemic novels being submitted at the moment, or is this just a rumour? #askagentI am definitely seeing more than usual but it's tailed off a little! #askagent

Thank you for doing these. I am among the many who appreciates them! Is it harder to sell books without a clear cut, traditional plot? What advice do you have for those writing something that is stubbornly veering from plot? #AskAgentI think, regardless of genre, plot is pretty important to readers! As a reader I need to be intrigued by the characters and writing - but also have a sense of suspense and where the story is going. I think Save the Cat is a useful resource #askagent

#askagent If you have recently parted company with an agent, should you say who they were, and why you went your separate ways?I'd really only want to know if the work you were sending me had already been submitted to other publishers #askagent

Matthew Holmes @MatthewHolmesBL
@mushenska Ah ok, at the moment I really only have a premise- so you would prefer the book to be finished before being pitched? That way I can say the narrative arc is X wants to do Y but ends up doing Z?for fiction, you need to have finished the book #AskAgent

Emma-Claire Wilson @ECWilsonWriter
#askagent - with the current situation, would you advise writers not to submit heavy subject book club-style books? It seems that all agents are looking for are cosy escapism at the moment and i'm worried that many just don't want emotional right now? @mushenska @julietpickeringI sold a reading group novel with dark themes just last week! #AskAgent

#askagent Hello! While waiting to hear back from agents I've subbed, I got some inspiration on how to improve the opening of my novel and I added a chapter to the beginning, if an agent makes a full MS request, is it worth mentioning/sending the new draft? Thx!potentially to new agents, but I wouldn't to those who already have it #AskAgent

Hi! What usually makes an agent pick up a story? Like what's the general criteria and what can an author do to fit into it? #askagentgood, clear pitch and quality writing! #AskAgent

Kathryn Sharman @SharmanKathryn
@mushenska @julietpickering How important is it to mention if you have queried that agent before with a different novel, especially if a full was requested? Do you want / need to know? Thanks! #askagentdon't need to mention it #AskAgent

#askagentHow would you break down submissions you recieve in terms of their general quality?
Do you get submissions that are really awful and do you give the same rejections to those as generally competent work that just isn't your cup of cocoa?
I give a standard rejection for time reasons largely (I receive 150 submissions a week) but if something does stand out, I'll normally add a personalised line or a PS #AskAgent
