#askagent do you have any advice for people looking to apply for agent assistant roles?research their list as much as possible and tailor your approach - I've had many applications where they don't reference a single client of mine, or their favourite genres are ones I don't rep #askagent

@julietpickering @LittleHardman @jounwin Last question! For say a chick-lit novel, I’m aiming around a 55-60k word count - is that average? Should it be less/more? #askagentusually 80k plus is more standard #askagent

How do you feel about comp titles that aren't recent or aren't even novels? Would being told that something has 'a good dose of Press Gang' help you understand what it was, or make you think it's way out of date? #askagentha ha I would get that reference but not everyone would I imagine #askagent

@jounwin Would you not read a pitch if the title was awful, or a 'working title' - or no title at all yet? #AskAgenta good title helps but I don't judge a book by a title as it could be changed! #askagent

@jounwin If an agency rejected a submission but saw that said novel was doing quite well with zero promotion - just ambling along on Amazon via word of mouth and the odd social media tweet, would an agency ever change their mind?I wouldn't - there are certainly novels I reject which go on to perform well, but it's about my own taste and love of the manuscript. #askagent

@mushenska my book has a friends to lovers trope, where shld tropes be included in the cover letter? In the blurb? Or listed with the book themes? Or not at all? Thx! #askagentI probably wouldn't mention it - I'd focus on making the blurb as strong as it could be instead #askagent

@jounwin So, I wrote a (non-fiction, travel) book. My agent vanished and I indie-published end 2019: excellent learning experience, a few good reviews, but still not selling loads. Working on new book. Do I send potential agents the old book? Or focus on new pitch? #askagent ...thanks!I'd say focus on new pitch #askagent

How far apart are the statements "I love this book" and "I can sell this book" for an agent? I imagine not as far apart as some might think? #askagentfor me it's the same thing - if I love it I presume I can sell it #askagent

Do you generally pass on manuscripts internally if you feel it doesn’t fit your list but it might fit a colleague‘s?I had a full being passed internally at one agency and now I’m unsure whether to query other agents at agencies where the queried agent passed. #AskAgent
most agencies (not all, but most) say a pass from one agent is a pass from all agents - if it was strong but not right for me I'd pass it internally #askagent

@mushenska @julietpickering Hello! As UK based agents, do you take on a lot of North American clients & do your clients normally get UK pub deals first? Wondering which side of the ocean is ideal to be querying on as a confused Canadian or if it doesn’t matter! #askagentI rep people from all over but my primary market is the U.K. so if you want to be published in the US and have a strong American sensibility probably best to query there #askagent

Is it business as usual? Has the submissions side of your work delayed somewhat due to current issues?#AskAgent
It is and it isn’t! I have had some publications delayed, and some publishing staff furloughed - mostly the same! #askagent

My first novel is part of a 3 book series- how much do I mention that in the pitch? A synopsis of the other 2 books too? How long should the synopsis be? #AskAgentJust focus on book 1 with a line saying you have 2 other books planned #askagent
