Gina 馃挴 @GBDolfan

Is it ok to vaguely mention something, like an illness, with no explanation, then give details later in the story, or do you have to explain right away? #AskAgent #CorvisieroLit
Replying to @GBDolfan

I think that it's usually best to slowly show the reader that there is an illness afoot, but not show it all right away to keep them actively engaged and let them figure out what's happening. #askagent

Aoife Doyle @1adoyle

#askagent I've changed my fantasy from adult to YA and cut it from 148k to 118k words. To cut more means axing scenes/chapters and am unsure what to cut. Could I query it as is and ask a future agent for help or do I need to get it under 100k?
Replying to @1adoyle

As @JoleneHaley said. 4 YA Fantasy the wordcount shouldn't be more than 85K. Especially for a debut. There are very few times that a work that long needs to be so. There is usually something to take out. Don't fall in love with your words. Keep the plot moving forward. #askagent

HJ Haydt [WIP: 126K] @HJHaydt

Will it impact your decision to represent if a writer has different projects in different genres?

#askagent
Replying to @HJHaydt

It won't really impact the decision for the one book, but do make sure you try to find agents that represent the genres you write in so that they can rep all your projects. #askagent @CorvisieroLit

Do agents ever help name their authors' works?

#askagent
Replying to @HJHaydt

Yes, we do help pick titles sometimes. Sometimes with the author before pitching and other times with the editors if they want to change the title. #askagent @CorvisieroLit #teamcorvisiero

HJ Haydt [WIP: 126K] @HJHaydt

Do agents shy away from new writers who are querying the first book in a planned series?

(Asking for a friend... It's me. I'm the friend.)

#askagent pic.twitter.com/OTSRjsW1RD
Replying to @HJHaydt

No we love debut authors. We are always looking for new talent. Tell your friend that when pitching the book they should say that the book is a strong stand alone with series potential. #askagent @CorvisieroLit

MZelaya @MZelaya8

@CorvisieroLit What's the longest an author should wait for a response on a full manuscript request before realizing it's been considered a pass? #askagent
Replying to @MZelaya8

Take a look at the Agent's guidelines to see if they respond to all queries. Some agents take longer than 2mo to look at all queries. Especially if they get a lot of submissions. I often do. If sub via e-mail, follow up in 3mo. If database wait. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

Heather L. Powell @HeatherLPowell

Question! If you write in more than one genre, should you look for agents who rep both? This is especially stuff when you think one of your books would be a good fit, but not the other. #askagent
Replying to @HeatherLPowell

Yes, look for an agent that might like both, or an agent in an agency that represents both and pitch your stronger work to hook them. That the best scenario, but also look for agents for each book separate. Cover all your bases. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

nicole bea @nicolebeawrites

Do you have any recommendations on signs for an author to look for that may indicate when they should think about shelving or extensively reworking their project? #askagent @CorvisieroLit
Replying to @nicolebeawrites

If you've pitched your project to the 'right' literary agents and they are all declining, consider the feedback you're getting. If you see a pattern, then you know what the issue is and you should fix it. If a timing or unlikeable story issue -- shelf it. #AskAgent

Uberjoe @uberjosephB

@mcorvisiero @Literary_Tara and if I self publish a book that bangs out 50 thousand copies, why do I need an agent? To me the story is what sells, if it's good it shouldn't matter if it's on the market or not. Just my 2 cents
Replying to @uberjosephB

You need an agent if you want the book to be published by a traditional publisher who can get you into stores and expand your reach, or to sell your sub-rights... or even your next work. It depends on your needs and goals. #AskAgent

Jenelle Stone @Jenelle_Stone

@CorvisieroLit #askagent

We often hear about what markets are saturated, but what types of books are in big demand right now? Do editors ask you to look out for specific things? Or types of stories?
Replying to @Jenelle_Stone

There are specific topics or categories that are more popular than others within different genres. These are often cyclical. YA is probably the best selling genre right now. Yes, editors share their #MSWL with us often. #AskAgent

Uberjoe @uberjosephB

@Literary_Tara @mcorvisiero #askagent why are agents so turned off by #selfpublished works?
Replying to @uberjosephB

It's not necessarily the work itself that's an issue. Agents look for original work that publishers will want. But if the work is already in the market, publishers will not look at it unless it's already selling well. They will not pick up a project that isn't selling. #AskAgent
