#askagent I've changed my fantasy from adult to YA and cut it from 148k to 118k words. To cut more means axing scenes/chapters and am unsure what to cut. Could I query it as is and ask a future agent for help or do I need to get it under 100k?As @JoleneHaley said. 4 YA Fantasy the wordcount shouldn't be more than 85K. Especially for a debut. There are very few times that a work that long needs to be so. There is usually something to take out. Don't fall in love with your words. Keep the plot moving forward. #askagent

Will it impact your decision to represent if a writer has different projects in different genres?#askagent
It won't really impact the decision for the one book, but do make sure you try to find agents that represent the genres you write in so that they can rep all your projects. #askagent @CorvisieroLit

Do agents ever help name their authors' works?#askagent
Yes, we do help pick titles sometimes. Sometimes with the author before pitching and other times with the editors if they want to change the title. #askagent @CorvisieroLit #teamcorvisiero

@hannahvanvels #askagentWould an agent or publisher frown on a manuscript where a portion of it had previously been published as a short story?
It isn't unheard of for a short story to be turned into a full novel. It may be an issue for some, but it can still work. #askagent @CorvisieroLit

Do agents shy away from new writers who are querying the first book in a planned series?(Asking for a friend... It's me. I'm the friend.)
#askagent pic.twitter.com/OTSRjsW1RD
No we love debut authors. We are always looking for new talent. Tell your friend that when pitching the book they should say that the book is a strong stand alone with series potential. #askagent @CorvisieroLit

What difference does it make to query an agent from the same country or another country? Is it better to query from the same country you live in?#askagent
It doesn't make a difference where your agent is located. A good agent can do their job from anywhere. #askagent @CorvisieroLit

I鈥檓 hoping it鈥檚 okay to ask ?鈥檚 though I鈥檓 not pitching. Thoughts on querying darker bks at this time? Everyone seems to be asking for upbeat, but I don鈥檛 write that. (I鈥檝e tried) Should authors just hold off querying if their themes are darker for a bit? @CorvisieroLit #askagentYes, of course. All Qs welcome. Yes, it's okay to pitch them. Especially if you the agent's submission guidelines don't say anything about not wanting them. Even if we want upbeat, it doesn't mean we won't like yours. :) #askagent @CorvisieroLit

@CorvisieroLit Thanks, y'all! An abandoned young boy with a magical imagination finds a portal in the back of his apartment鈥檚 closet. He sees a whole new world over there鈥攐ne with new parents, a baby brother, and maybe, if they don鈥檛 catch him, a new place to call home. #AskAgent #A #LF
This sounds nice... it would be interesting if you elude to things not being quite right. Kind of like Caroline. or is it more of a Narnia Situation? #askagent @CorvisieroLit

American agents, can I query you as a Canadian writer? Will the fact that I'm in a different country play into your decision?#askagent
We love our Canadian neighbors. We have many clients from CA. Please send us your work. :) #askagent @CorvisieroLit

@kissedbyink Thank you! 鈽猴笍鈽猴笍Would it be better to have one more recent COMP than a recent and an older? I've been using Deborah Harkness, as it's similar in tone and style to my MS but the last in the trilogy was 2014 (standalone was 2018). Too old? #AskAgent
I would suggest using the comps that fit your work the best and if they all do, then use whichever showcases the key or most interesting elements of your story. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

Here's a question that probably has no answer or too many, BUT...for those of us who write realistic, contemporary fiction:How do we make our stories/queries sound more compelling (compared with unique, exciting fantasy or sci-fi)? #askagent
Science fiction and fantasy are very different from contemp fiction, and so the expectations are different for the reviewers too. Focus on your story and your hook and present it in the most interesting way you can. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

@CorvisieroLit Does this agency work with Big 5 publishers or have best-selling authors? Thank you for your time. #askagentYes, we work with top 5, big, medium and smaller pubs are long as they do work and take care of our authors. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit And you're welcome. :)

@mcorvisiero @MZelaya8 @CorvisieroLit Do you look at everything as it comes in and then shelve it or don鈥檛 look at all until you work through each submission?#askagentMost try to review them in the order that they come in. But sometimes if we are looking for something we might skip. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

@CorvisieroLit What's the longest an author should wait for a response on a full manuscript request before realizing it's been considered a pass? #askagentTake a look at the Agent's guidelines to see if they respond to all queries. Some agents take longer than 2mo to look at all queries. Especially if they get a lot of submissions. I often do. If sub via e-mail, follow up in 3mo. If database wait. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

Question! If you write in more than one genre, should you look for agents who rep both? This is especially stuff when you think one of your books would be a good fit, but not the other. #askagentYes, look for an agent that might like both, or an agent in an agency that represents both and pitch your stronger work to hook them. That the best scenario, but also look for agents for each book separate. Cover all your bases. #AskAgent @CorvisieroLit

Do you have any recommendations on signs for an author to look for that may indicate when they should think about shelving or extensively reworking their project? #askagent @CorvisieroLitIf you've pitched your project to the 'right' literary agents and they are all declining, consider the feedback you're getting. If you see a pattern, then you know what the issue is and you should fix it. If a timing or unlikeable story issue -- shelf it. #AskAgent

@mcorvisiero @Literary_Tara and if I self publish a book that bangs out 50 thousand copies, why do I need an agent? To me the story is what sells, if it's good it shouldn't matter if it's on the market or not. Just my 2 centsYou need an agent if you want the book to be published by a traditional publisher who can get you into stores and expand your reach, or to sell your sub-rights... or even your next work. It depends on your needs and goals. #AskAgent

@CorvisieroLit #askagentWe often hear about what markets are saturated, but what types of books are in big demand right now? Do editors ask you to look out for specific things? Or types of stories?
There are specific topics or categories that are more popular than others within different genres. These are often cyclical. YA is probably the best selling genre right now. Yes, editors share their #MSWL with us often. #AskAgent

@Literary_Tara @mcorvisiero #askagent why are agents so turned off by #selfpublished works? It's not necessarily the work itself that's an issue. Agents look for original work that publishers will want. But if the work is already in the market, publishers will not look at it unless it's already selling well. They will not pick up a project that isn't selling. #AskAgent
