#QueryTip - there seems to be some confusion—when you mark your query “CNR” on query tracker that doesn’t close your query on the agent’s side. We don’t see that note. The only way to tell us “don’t consider this anymore” is to withdraw it.

Literary Agent
#QueryTip: I heard a rumor that there's some advice floating around to close out a query as no response after 2-4 weeks & well... You should NOT. Unless the agent specifically says, they likely haven't seen your query yet or are still considering it. (Quick 🧵)

What is an inciting incident?
It’s the moment your MC can no longer have their “normal.” It’s the thing that forces them to make a decision (whether that is action or in action). It’s the driving force of the story and should happen toward the beginning of the book #QueryTip

#QueryTip for #AmQuerying authors
Your query letter should have
Who is the MC?
What do they want? Goals
What stands in their way? Obstacles
What happens if they fail? Stakes
Also meta data- WC, genre, age group (if nec), comp titles, author bio
You got this! ❤️

Synopsis tip for #AmQuerying writers - When introducing your character for the 1st time in a synopsis (not talking about the query letter) put their name in ALL CAPS. This is super helpful when reading.

Super excited to be presenting at @SCBWIHouston monthly meeting. @SydneyDunlap16 & I will be talking about "What Happens Next" -- after signing with an agent & what that relationship looks like.
Come armed with all the questions!

#QueryTip - I’ve seen a lot of rhetorical questions in query letters so let me ask 1, do you want agents thinking about how they’d answer that question or reading & wanting to understand your story?
What if they don’t answer the way you need for them to go along w/ your premise?

Reminder authors: you don’t need my permission to query me. My query manager is open and if you have a project you think we will be a match on send it! I respond to all queries sent there even if it takes a minute 😉❤️ #QueryTip

#QueryTip: I am one of those weirdos that not just asks for a synopsis but I read them as part of the submission process. If you don’t include one, I can’t review your project the way I need to know if we’re a good fit. If writing a synopsis is a deal breaker, I get it…

Something I never thought I would have to say—a query is not an application for a dating site. 🙃

#QueryTip - Do not write your query letter in first person. This is especially awkward when it's a thriller and people have been kidnapped in the book. 🙃

Reminder that all queries sent unsolicited to my inbox (meaning my work email) will NOT be considered.
This isn’t to be mean. This is to keep it fair for all authors. #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

Hard truth (a short 🧵): I have to reject really amazing sounding books everyday. Think about it this way, if you were handed 100+ books a week (every week) could you realistically read them all? … #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

All written in a way that showcases your writing
Here are some quick tips to get you started... 🧵
Great tips for the author bio in a query letter.
I know I love to read about how the author is connected to the work ❤️ or what inspired the story.

A friendly request: I do not mind when people requery me with the same project after they’ve made changes but I do kindly ask that you make a note of the changes you made in the query letter.
Thank you!

Back on the elliptical—or in other words, back to my BS—and thought a good distraction could be a thread about the R word (rejection) anyone up for it? #QueryTip #WritingCommunity #AmQuerying

The number of queries I’ve seen lately with 200k & 300k words has been a little concerning so I thought I’d try to take a moment to chat about high word counts… a 🧵

QUERY UPDATE: As of this morning I have NO access to submissions sent through the Prospect website. My Query Manager is open and you are welcome to submit there. Please note if it is a repeat from the Prospect Site. I'm sorry for any inconvenience. #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

Query Update: Kindly requesting those who want to query me to use Query Manager (link in pinned tweet). We are still having server issues & it's now taking 2 minutes to open a single query letter (this does not include reading time). 😭
