@ErikThurman Like with fiction, editors are looking for a big hook and something that they fell will appeal to as broad an audience as possible. It's very subjective, of course, but... #askGZLAultimately, the editors and acquisitions team make those kinds of calls in the end. It really depends on how you're framing your nonfiction proposal. #askGZLA

#askGZLA #askagent What are your recommendations for getting nonfiction work published that is extremely timely in the publishing world? I’m covering the ongoing crisis in Chile and despite seeing success in journalism outlets, publishing has mostly given an apathetic shrug.Like with fiction, editors are looking for a big hook and something that they fell will appeal to as broad an audience as possible. Are there any recent SFF MG authors or books that have stood out for you? #askgzlaThis one's contemp with light Sci-Fi elements, but I loved @ibizoboi's MY LIFE AS AN ICE CREAM SANDWICH. And this one came out a couple years back, but @Mike_Jung's UNIDENTIFIED SUBURBAN OBJECT. #askGZLA

@AliceArley The tricky thing is that it needs to be something that's well known, but not so well known (i.e., Percy Jackson series) that it makes it seem as if you don't read within your genre... #askGZLAAnd if you really can't come up with comps, best to not put any down. Better to not stretch it, since no comp is better than a bad one, trust me. #askGZLA

@AliceArley It can be in regards to storyline or theme, though I generally look for "feel." It can be tricky to do it outside of the genre, but it's definitely possible. Books are ideal, but movies/plays can work! #askGZLAThe tricky thing is that it needs to be something that's well known, but not so well known (i.e., Percy Jackson series) that it makes it seem as if you don't read within your genre... #askGZLA

What defines a comp?(storyline vs theme etc). Can a comp be a movie/play? #askGZLA Does a comp have to be in your genre (ie. Can you say "a YA GOT for example?).It can be in regards to storyline or theme, though I generally look for "feel." It can be tricky to do it outside of the genre, but it's definitely possible. How long after getting a like from an agent during a pitch event is acceptable to wait before querying? #askgzlaYou can query as soon as you like, provided it's ready to go. I generally caution against waiting a very long time, like a year or two afterward. #askGZLA

@GalltZackerLit Hi there! When looking for an illustrator do you prefer someone who is adaptable or someone who illustrates only one way? Thanks! #askGZLAHi! I look for someone who can be a bit adaptable, depending on the medium/category, but who has a distinctive style. #askGZLA

What factors do you consider when requesting an R&R versus offering on a project? #AskgzlaI don't really do R&Rs these days, but I did a few when I was in my first year of agenting. I did them when I saw promise, but the manuscript was not quite there. #askGZLA

Are song lyrics allowed in an MS are there copyright questions around them? #askgzlaThat does become a licensing issue, so legal (at the publisher) will be brought in. It's generally cost prohibitive, though, depending on the song. #AskGZLA

#askgzla I queried a book a couple years ago and got a lot of requests, but ultimately no yes. I'm gearing up to query my next project and I'm wondering about query strategy. Do I query those agents that requested my book first, all at once? Batches? Mix in with new agents? Eep!I generally recommend batches to gauge the response. And yes to mixing it up! #AskGZLA

#askgzla Are publishers generally open to comics that have already been published online? They can be! It depends on the audience for it, but if they love it, yes! My very first sale was of MOONCAKES (@AngrygirLcomics @suzusaur) and quite a bit of it was online first. #AskGZLA

#AskGZLA I’ve been offered a government subsidy for a full ms critique by an agency. However, I would be required to include 1 or 2 logos of the government bodies in the novel’s colophon. Will this limit my publishing opportunities, especially with the Big 5 publishers? #askagentI've never run into this, but I don't think so? Publishers thankfully have a legal department who would be brought into discuss it if it did become an issue. #AskGZLA

@AgentZacker and another agent talked about their agency's focus on hanging on to and selling every imaginable subright (licensed pajamas, etc). It was stuff I'd never even considered, so was curious whether GZLA had some unknown focus area as well! 🙂 #AskGZLALiterary Agent

#AskGZLAHere's one we just had a discussion on this week on #kidlitchat. How do you feel about prologues? I can't decide whether or not to have one in my mg novel. I've heard mostly negative things about prologues lately, but this one--I swear--might actually work. Thoughts?

#AskGZLAIs it important to you if the querying author has an MFA in Creative Writing? ✨🎓
Nope, nope, nope. I have one from @VCFAWCYA and I loved it there, but do I expect it from potential clients? Not at all! Most of my clients don't have one. #AskGZLA

#AskGZLA What can publishing do to make the field of agenting more accessible for young people wanting to start a career in agenting? Especially for people from marginalized backgrounds? So true -- @erin_michelle_C makes a good point about money and accessibility, the things that unfortunately keep many marginalized people out of agenting careers. I'm happy to say that @GalltZackerLit offers a paid internship, which is a great start 😀 #AskGZLA
