Query #1 - author calls it a picture book, but it's really an early chapter book. Either way, I don't represent. Pass.

Thanks to @SaraMegibow for the hashtag. #10queriesin10tweets is a quick look in my query inbox, with my brief reactions to what I see there.

#tenqueries takeaway #4: Episodic narratives don't work. Story needs to pull you through, not skip along, & the pitch needs to reflect this.

#tenqueries takeaway #3: I want your contemp YA but it's all about the voice.

#tenqueries takeaway #2: I want to love your literary MG (contemporary or historical). Truly. Keep sending it to me! #mswl

#tenqueries takeaway #1: I'm still not the best fit for fantasy.

Q10: YA Contemp. The pitch was, yes, pitch-perfect, but the voice was distant. Almost entirely dialogue, with a few stage directions.
Literary Agent
Q9: MG Fantasy. A little too idiosyncratic without a reason for my taste. And the plot pitch suggests it's too episodic.
Literary Agent
Q8: MG humor. Bathroom humor. Just not my thing.
Literary Agent
Q7: MG humor. Told from POV of much younger protagonist. Perhaps better for chapter book series. Short for MG, long for chapter book series.
Literary Agent
Q6: MG paranormal. Told from POV of dog. Love Charlotte's Web, but I'll be surprised if I fall in love w/ a MG sub told from an animal's POV
Literary Agent
Q5: MG historical: Really want to find a literary MG hist, but this isn't it: too much of concept crammed into beginning with awk dialogue.
Literary Agent
Q4: YA historical. YA historical coming-of-age without a compelling hook is a difficult sell. Just wasn't grabbed.
Literary Agent
Q3: YA Realistic. Coming-of-age story with no clear central premise, so needs strong voice, but the beginning is all telling.
Literary Agent
Q2: YA Contemp. Cute if familiar premise, but beginning is weighted down with too much directionless interiority. The story fails to begin.
Literary Agent
Q1: Historical YA. The pitch isn't gripping, with too much narrative framing ("In the 2nd half...") & back-story. No concise or clear hook.
Literary Agent
Q10: NF about dogs of the military. There are already a TON of military dog books out there, but I'll request the full. #tenqueries
Literary Agent
Q9: Just because I'm looking for historical fiction doesn't mean I'll overlook the fact that this is a romance. Just not for me #tenqueries
Literary Agent
Q8: Unbelievable dialogue to open the story, had a lot of trouble getting into it. Effective dialogue is very hard to do well #tenqueries

Q7: YA about a high-stakes tournament where kids are forced to enter. I feel like I maybe read this somewhere else before... #tenqueries
