Scott Eagan opened Greyhaus Literary Agency in 2003 with three goals in mind: •To remain a small agency focusing only on Romance and Women's Fiction •To provide educational opportunities for writers in these genres and to make efforts to enhance the romance and women's fiction genres. •To assist with increasing communications between the professional publishing community and the writers.
Literary Agency
#Pubtip DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT send a submission claiming it was "Requested Material" when it was not. Sorry, but we don't work with people who try to sneak in with this approach. We want honest authors.
Literary Agency
#pubtip Hint, editors and agents cannot make a decision on your query letter if all you tell me are the themes of your story. Remember, there is this little thing called plot.
Literary Agency
#Pubtip when submitting a manuscript to an editor or agent, pls include your email in the message and make sure it is accurate. Had one today where the author gave me a partial home address and no email. My submission form doesn't track your email. Bummer.
Literary Agency
#Pubtip If you want great success in publishing, take the time to learn to write and learn the business. This is like going to school before entering the work force. You have to have skills.
Literary Agency
#Pubtip Make sure to fully know and understand your genre as well as the market. I have been rejecting a lot of authors who seem to have just sat down and wrote something not realizing there is no place out there for that book (even in the self-pub realm).
Literary Agency
#Pubtip Remember that while one trope or sub-genre might work for one publisher, it does not mean it will work for someone else. Each publisher has their own unique market and following!
Literary Agency
#pubtip Just a hint. If you decide to send something other than what an agent or editor wants in a submission, you should probably expect a rejection due to either your lack of literacy skills or your refusal to follow directions.
Literary Agency
If your query letter is vague and we have no idea what it is about, we will not request more to find out. We will reject. #pubtip
Literary Agency
#pubtip Always look for ways to get your name out there to the readers. Make sure it is positive. Remember, readers buy the authors they remember
Literary Agency
#pubtip Think about where your writing fits with which publisher and/or line. Then read those lines extensively. Don't just throw darts.
Literary Agency
#pubtip At least once a week, step away from your manuscript and look at the writing of others.
Literary Agency
#pubtip If you have tried for years to get someone to pick up your book, or you have received a ton of rejections, the odds are, the book is not good or not marketable.
Literary Agency
#pubtip Remember, simply writing a story about a hot social topic, or inserting it into the storyline DOES NOT make the story better. Still about the writing. #goodwritingsells
Literary Agency
#pubtip In Romance, remember to keep the story focused on the relationship building. Subplots that detract will ruin the story.
Literary Agency
What is your goal for writing today? Is it reasonable? Is it too little? Too much? #pubtip Have a goal EVERY day before you write.
Literary Agency
#pubtip. If an agent or editor rejects you, don't argue. Learn from the comments and find some place where your story better fits, or fix the issues we told you the story had.
Literary Agency
#pubtip Make sure there is a logical reason why A) your characters would meet; B) your characters would ever have a relationship; and C) this relationship would last beyond the conflict in your story.
Literary Agency
#pubtip When you have grammar errors in your query letter, you are already setting yourself up for a rejection.
Literary Agency
#pubtip Please keep track of your submissions. I just had to reject someone AGAIN (this was the third time).
Literary Agency
#pubtip Keep your synopsis simple. Focus only on the main storyline and don't obsess on the subplots unless TRULY necessary!
