@annmrose Thank you for doing this! When is it okay to requery? Ex. It’s been a year since first query, but I nudged a month ago (twitter said all queries from my query time would be read) mentioning I made changes in the last year. Is it okay to requery, or should I count this as a no?So you never got a response from a year ago?
My rule of thumb is that if you’ve made substantial changes you can try again, just mention it in the query. #AskAnAgent

@annmrose I’ve noticed that the YA market has gotten more competitive (w/presses closing), and that many of the editors I follow are looking for darker adult books. But as an author looking at MSWL tags, I feel like there’s a disconnect. Many agents are still hunting for YA. Thoughts?Yes we are. Because we still need books for teens ❤️

@annmrose I live in Wales in the UK. Do you advise to only ever query agents from the same country as you, or for example could I query American literary agents? I’ve stayed clear of it so far!You absolutely can query American agents if you’d like. Especially if you want to break out in the US market they will have a good handle if its pulse #AskAnAgent

@annmrose Is there actionable advice you can give for someone who has workshopped their query and first pages with multiple CPs and beta readers and is still getting form rejections? :)If you are just getting form I would make sure you are really showing what the hook is (query) and that you are starting in the right place (pages)
How many rejections are we talking about though because if it’s not a lot it could be fine and you just have to keep going

@annmrose How many rejections should I get before calling it quits? That’s not an answer I can make for you but I can say if you are getting all form rejections based on the query something likely isn’t working there or in the opening pages. If you are getting them after requests likely the middle has an issue.

@annmrose How often do you reject a book that’s good but not right for you vs rejecting because the book isn’t ready?I don’t have statistics but this does happen and it’s always hard to do

@annmrose What is a developmental edit ? And is it necessary?Development edit is an overview edit of the strengths and weaknesses of a manuscript.
Is one needed before you submit to agents? Not necessarily, but the MS should be workshopped either with critque partners or beta readers or some other eyes besides yours or family members 😉

@annmrose I am writing an inspiration book. Is it ok to center a page of writing or should the text be left-justified? Thank you!General formatting for manuscripts is 12 pt Times New Roman or similar font, black “ink”, double spaced, 1 inch margins, and paragraphs indented. If there is a need for sections to be center justified than do what needs to be done

@annmrose Does the number of followers a writer has on Twitter have much/any input into your decisions? What about their profile pic? And age? Are you always conscious that you have to sell them as much as their book?
Twitter followers don’t mean anything to me. Same with profile pic. The only thing I pay attention to on Twitter is how someone treats other people (meaning I don’t like trolls). But numbers aren’t as important in fiction and that’s mostly what I do

@annmrose What's the character POV limit on a debut novel? Is publishing truly about sales and story?
Well I think that varies on age group & genre expectations so there’s no one hard fast answer.
At its core, publishing is a business & books are a product—I know it’s hard to think about art in these terms and it’s uncomfortable but that’s the reality

@annmrose How long should a younger middle grade historical fantasy be? And how much agents should I submit to at once?I think 40k-60k is kind of the sweet spot for most MG… as for how many? That’s a personal preference. I know some writers send batches out in 10s some more some less, you have to do with what you are comfortable with.

@annmrose How is it some writers who had agents can get a second one is less than a month but some are still trying after two years? It can really burn your self-esteem.I think it depends on a number of factors ❤️
It’s important to be kind to yourself and try not compare your journey to someone else’s — there is no one path to publishing ❤️

@annmrose Do agents consider hybrid authors any different than those who haven't published before? What if their book has been "successful", and how do agents determine indie success?#askagent
I think there is a lot to unpack here that I couldn’t do much justice in a single tweet. I will say for me, I look at each book sent to me as it’s own thing and if I love it all that other stuff is just details we may have to figure out

@annmrose How often do R & Rs result in offers? It's hard to find data on that online. And in your experience what makes one successful?I don’t think there is any hard fast data on this and would have a number of variables.
I’ve had it work out a number of times ❤️

@annmrose From your perspective, how is the demand for SFF in 2022 so far? Holding steady? Slacking? Growing?I think the trick with any genre is to make sure you have a solid and distinct hook

@annmrose I have writtenna Jane Austen sequel/ who do I query? Historical Fiction? Romance? (Not a Classic romance, ive been told). Help!Well you would first want to figure out what the genre is (and if it is considered a romance or not) and then target agents who represent that genre.

@annmrose What makes YA fiction literary? And are these books a hard sell?I consider “literary” to be the tone or mood of the story and has a lot to do with the voice.
Whether it is a “harder sell” or not would be determined on a number of factors including content/concept etc

@annmrose What might cause an agent to ask for an R+R vs working on the editing as a team after signing with a client? Is there a threshold for the amount of changes needed or is it more about how marketable the book is intitially/how much you love it?I think a number of things come into play. 1) is the author capable or even willing to make these changes—it is their story after all so they get to make the decision what changes do and don’t get made so it’s a question of aligned vision … (cont)

@annmrose How hard is it to sell MG high fantasy? Would illustrations make it more sellable? Is it more enticing if the writer is also the illustrator? Asking for myself and others like me. 🌻I think it comes down to execution no matter what the age group/genre

@annmrose At what stage do you think it’s best to think about commercializing a book? I love the whimsical idea of chasing a book’s heart (and I do/must 💞) but I know the eventual commodification is always coming so that it can sell 😅Are you asking about making something “commercial fiction”? A book doesn’t need to be “commercial” to be sellable.
