@annmrose Do you read for fun? Not research, not work, not to keep up on the latest, but pure fun.Not as much as I want to, but yes. I just bought three new books this weekend!

@annmrose if querying a novel with very large chapters (10k+) and the queried agent requests "first three chapters" or something similar, is it best to just go with the first 3-5K words rather than putting something that large into a query? thanks for your time!I mean you can follow guidelines, they won’t fault you for that. — on a side note though really long chapters can make the pacing feel off so make sure they NEED to be that long.

@annmrose Let's say you have a YA MS that includes a romance but also includes a lot of other contemporary issues. When pitching, would you pitch it as a Romance or as a Contemporary? That depends; is the central focus of the story a romance or is it the contemporary issues. What is the core of the plot—the glue that holds it all together? Also, is there an HEA?

@annmrose If you’re querying an agent you’ve queried previously but with an entirely new MS do you mention the earlier query? You can if you’d like but it’s not necessary.

@annmrose If an agent has a vision for a MG novel to be a graphic MG novel, would they find the illustrator? And I guess another question, what makes a *good* graphic novel in terms of writing? Not necessarily, but they may have one in mind. If an agent brings the idea up to you speak to them about it and how they envision the process going.
I don’t think the second question can be answered in a simple tweet. But do remember the art does a big portion of the job

@annmrose What is the proper way to nudge an agent for a query response?I would first check their website about how and if they respond and what their standard timeframe is, then if you feel a nudge is warranted, a “I just wanted to check in and see if you had any thoughts about TITLE.” Keep it simple and short.

@annmrose Are agents generally hesitant to sign someone outside of the USA/UK? I can imagine that it's a bit of a logistical nightmare.No. I don’t think we are. I’ve personally offered to those out of the US before

@annmrose Why do agents ghost on fulls? And is there anything the author can do to prompt a response/closure?Some agents do unfortunately.
I personally respond to ALL full requests. And authors can feel free to nudge.
The best you can do if they aren’t responsive is to try a few times and if there is still nothing just close no response. 😔

@FractalOfLoops It depends. We look to authors for that information because you are telling us where you see your book placed. We also assume it’s what you did on purpose so if you are querying an adult book and calling it YA there is an assumption you want to be a YA author… cont…I kind of answer this question here but if you have other questions let me know twitter.com/annmrose/statu…

@annmrose When you request a synopsis from a potential client, is there anything specific you are looking for beyond the plot and the main cast?Im looking for complete story and MC character arc with spoilers

@annmrose Will agents work with authors who have a good book/query but have made mistakes or dubious choices about marketing category (ex. upper YA vs adult or urban fantasy vs paranormal romance), or is that a definite rejection? It depends. We look to authors for that information because you are telling us where you see your book placed. We also assume it’s what you did on purpose so if you are querying an adult book and calling it YA there is an assumption you want to be a YA author… cont…

@annmrose If an agent with a full manuscript said to check back in a few weeks if you don't hear back, how many weeks is "a few"? And if you nudged and didn't hear anything, how long should you wait before nudging again?I usually say three months before a nudge so if they said a few weeks that seems oldly unspeficially specific

@annmrose When agents ask for the full do they typically read the whole thing before making a choice noting what they would want to change giving the whole thing a chance or will they just stop part of the way through and reject? I’ve always wondered how much of a chance they give each MS.No not always. Plenty of times the “murky middle” gets really murky so an agent will stop and reject at that point. If you are getting full rejections this is likely the reason. The middle needs some more work.

@annmrose What’s something that makes a query an auto request for you?If it’s something I don’t represent or the word count is extremely out of range — “here is my 200k word MG contemporary the first in a 5 book series”

@annmrose If you do something deliberately in the book, like not name the MC, is there a place for that to be explained in the query?Yes this would probably need to be addressed … the how would vary on the project

@annmrose How difficult is it generally for an agent to sell a book and has it gotten harder since you first became an agent? It varies on the project and timing. Overall I would say the big difference is in how long it takes these days. So many be not harder just longer

@annmrose what’s a good wordcount range for lower YA fantasy?60k-80k — I guess it depends on how “low” we are talking about and could it just be MG?

@annmrose I read somewhere that if an author has previously published a novel/novella with a small indie press and not sold a ton of copies due to it being an indie press, it will be more difficult for them to trad publish and find an agent in the future. Is this true? Thank you!Not that I have seen.

@annmrose I'm writing a ~10-book mystery series, but am finishing the first three books before I start querying. I've read that you should only focus on the first book in the query. However, should I mention I have two more books "ready to go"? Thanks. That’s ambitious of you.
I always tell clients only to write the first book and move on because if book 1 doesn’t sell you are spinning your wheels.
But that wasn’t what you asked.
