If you're planning to pitch a nonfiction book, use one of the most powerful persuasion tools--storytelling--to make the proposal memorable. I'm not talking about the sample chapters or ms (that goes w/o saying) but the overview, bio, TOC & marketing. #pubtip

Querying writers! If you receive an offer of rep (yay!) it is standard to let every agent still considering know and give them 2 weeks to make a decision on your work. You increase your chances of finding the best fit! It might be the first agent; it might not! #querytip

Authors: Please, please, please notify agents who have your query when you accept representation. #querytip

#querytip I'm not quite back on the vampire train yet, so if you have a vampire novel, I'm probably not the right fit right now!
That being said, if you have a new twist on them (and they aren't called vampires), I'm open to that! Think malchai from THIS SAVAGE SONG ๐

I love it when authors set their novels in interesting and unique places and make the setting part of the story. #querytip

1st week back to work & 1st week the @PSLiterary query box is open.
Some fun #querystats:
I got approx. 120 queries pitched to me specifically the past 5 days of the queries being open.
I've read 50% & flagged 2 for requests.
1 query I saw right away & requested directly.

#querytip The most common reasons I pass on novels are 1)Manuscript isnโt ready. 2)Too many filler words. 3)Inappropriate word count for genre or category. 4)Too much telling. I donโt take pleasure in passing and want authors to succeed. Editing is valuable.

I knocked out about 50 queries today.... I have gotten 25 queries since then. This is why sometimes it takes a while for us to answer! I love you all but I need some puppy cuddle time #amagenting #amquerying #querytip

#querytip: Volunteering in bios
Having a quick and concise query is key but we also like to see what else you're up to when you're not at the keyboard to make a personal connection. Where do you volunteer?

Lately I see submissions that ignore the subjunctive mood.
I wish it were not so.
Hereโs a quick and dirty reminder of when/how to use subjunctive:

@JNRlitauthor One of things I love so far is your suggestion for writers to view themselves more as "pre-published authors" as opposed to an "aspiring author". It may seem like a subtle shift in words, but I think it makes a big difference. #TheWritersZenYay! Iโm so glad you loved that. I think changing perspectives is so important. I think writers need to adjust our own definitions of certain words, especially โproductivityโ. Sometimes being productive is knowing when to take a break #TheWritersZen

@JNRlitauthor One more #AskAgent question!I have a friend who is about to start querying. What's the most common thing you wish new querying writers knew? #TheWritersZen
Great question! I think the most common thing would be to make sure your query sounds like a plot summary and not a synopsis. It should serve to let the agent know the stakes and to want to request additional material to read more #TheWritersZen

@JNRlitauthor I have a story that I previously queried (more than a year and a half ago at this point for most agents) but have rewritten at least 75% of the content, including huge plot & character arcs. Can you ever requiry? Or best not to and only start fresh with new agents? #TheWritersZenGreat question! I think if itโs been over a year and the manuscript has significantly been revised, then it would be okay to query again. You may just want to mention that in the query letter. Hope that helps! #TheWritersZen

A friendly #querytip that when you receive an agent rejection, please remember that we often see titles on the shelves we once passed on, and kick ourselves a little bit for it. We are human. Our opinions are only ours.
Keep going. Keep revising & keep querying. Prove us wrong.
