E. R. Hoffer @erhoffer

@WeronikaJanczuk I've heard that demand for audiobooks is growing fast. Does this trend factor into consideration of manuscripts? Or impact the way agents work with authors? Or in the next 3 years? Thanks! #askagent
Replying to @erhoffer

This is a great question! To some extent, this seems to me like it differs among agents. While the core publishing market is book-based, and a lot of audiobooks go viral following successful traditional pub, there may be agencies that specialize in rights for audio. #askagent

Not Eric Fowler @ericfowler215

for submissions, how important is formatting within a manuscript (i.e. using italics or fonts for different characters/voices) #askagent
Replying to @ericfowler215

What are you asking about, specifically? Most dialogue happens in quotation marks, per standard dialogue format. Italics = emphasis, thoughts, etc. Any specific examples? I would make sure to format well in your submissions process. #askagent

Tabitha Chirrick @TabKey

So sad I missed this! I have a burning question. Are agents less likely to consider a writer who has self-published previous work? Even if the manuscript they submit has never been pubbed or posted? Is SP a black mark? #AskBookEnds #askagent
Replying to @TabKey

In m'experience, this depends on the agent. I don't weigh this question at all until I've determined the quality of a given manuscript, and ultimately am not too moved by SP, or poor sales; strong sales help much--one writer I love broke into traditional pub this way. #askagent

Tamara Rittershaus @TRittershaus

@bookendslit #askagent As a PB writer, most guidelines ask for the full manuscript, so I never get a "request for full" or any other indicator that I'm on the right track. Is it ever appropriate to respond to a form rejection and ask, "Was my MS even close?"
Replying to @TRittershaus

Unfortunately, agents just don't have time to give individualized feedback. (I receive about 3,000 queries a year, other agents receive more.) The best people to ask if your manuscript is marketable is your critique group, a writing class, or a crit partner, etc. #askagent

Kristin Kumm Connon @kristinconnon

#AskAgent @bookendslit How important is "correct" formatting of the MS in a query? I would assume its pretty important for requested materials.
Replying to @kristinconnon

I don't think you'll get rejected for, like, having different indentations, etc - that would be silly - but as a general rule, we read a LOT, so having easy fonts and double spacing is really important so our eyes don't bleed. #askbookends #askagent

Tim Weed @weedlit

Do you tend to sign based to some extent on what your sense of the publishing zeitgeist & what the editors you know are specifically looking for? Or is personal taste more of a factor? #AskAgent
Replying to @weedlit

It’s a bit of all three. I’ve taken on books I knew would be challenging in the market because I couldn’t live without them, but the wants of the market do play a role a good portion of the time. #AskAgent

MJ @MJWheelerNU

#AskAgent if someone had custom concept art for a MS pinned to their twitter or other social media, do you enjoy looking at it? Does it add anything to your experience when considering a MS?
Replying to @MJWheelerNU

This doesn't influence my decision - the writing should paint the picture for me. That said, it doesn't harm anything, either, and when I sign a client I love seeing their Pinterest boards. #askbookends #askagent
